on start up the car vibrates badly once warm its ok, the engine sounds like its hitting the bulk head or something like that bit of a clout on start up, sometimes when put in to N postion from drive there is little or no vibration???sometimes, there is another problem when starting the engine mainly from cold it cuts out then grey or white smoke appears if you keep up the revs its fine , is this sucking air have read previous posts? also the asr light comes on from time to time and loss of power are all these faults linked please help if you can. regards.

Vibration could be due to engine mounts but if the engine is not starting properly it may be due to that. Maybe a set of glow plugs are needed for the starting problem. You may find that the asr problem is un-related to the vibration/starting problem. Asr faults normally point to a brake light switch.

You very likely have 2 issues.

1 - glow plug failure

2 - engine mount failure

Theres a howto on engine mounts in the relevant section of the forum.

Do a search for glow plugs, loads of threads about it. Tricky job.

engine mounts everything points that way thanks for the help. next step would like some amg aero 18inch wheels how much will this affect my comfort.also have replaced the brake light switch so maybe not connected to the asr ?? thanks for you advice.

Look in your user manual for wheel size specifications. They're listed in one of the booklets.

this morning wont start?

i wait for the glow plug lights to go out then turn the key, its always starts buts its 50/50 if it keeps running then the revs become erratic up down then the smoke starts if i floor it revs keep up, this sometimes happens when hot or cold engine? is it still the heater plugs thanks for any advice you have given.

Does the light come back on whilst running? If so, then it could be that one or more of the glow plugs could be down. It might be worth changing them for the relatively small cost it is. I am sure there will be a how to thread on this subject somewhere. Remember,if attempting to do the job yourself you are best removing them with a warm engine and you will need to replace the inlet manifold gasket (about £7) when re-assembling. Good luck!

You mentioned the white/grey smoke on start up. This would indicate excessive UNBURNT fuel to me - and would certainly make the engine run lumpy if it is being over fuelled - this would explain the excessive engine movement.

Suggest a diagnostic check before spending out on glow plugs and mounts -
