I've had my E320 estate since Oct 2016, and have noticed that it was a bit clunky when hitting rough surfaces, my local garage that did the MOT said nothing wrong that they could see :dk:, and have recently noticed a creaking at slow speed, 5mph to stop or when just starting away.

Anyway I had been out today, when I got back I parked it on my drive and was talking to my neighbour, all of a sudden there was a bang, the car dropped down and this fell out from underneath.

So do I assume that a shock absorber or a spring has collapsed, and if so would you recommend a supplier, also would you do both sides at the same time, and is it a DIY job.

Well 48 people have looked at my post, but not one has commented, must be a difficult question.

I looked but don't know the answer, I understand that the springs do go frequently though.

I concur, am sure the front spring has gone , but not sure if the ring is part of it or if it is a part of the top or bottom support. You will need a pair although in theory you could replace just the broken one. My offside spring went last year at only 41 k miles Happened while driving so replace both. Did think car handled better afterwards.

Is it airmatic? It seems to be part of the bottom gaitor (dust boot)

If you are lucky, the retaining clip has just come off although it does sound like a broken spring that has caused it. Check out this listing for the pictures

Yes it is a difficult question when we can't see your car...

Your Spring has failed, that's the part the spring sits on, as for the knocking it's probably a bottom ball joint, very common and not easy to find if the garage just wobble the wheel to check for play.

Thanks for your comments guys, so it seems that I need a set of springs, and have contacted MB, they quoted £152 +vat for shocks, and £50.50 + vat for springs, although they need the colour codes from old springs to supply.

If you can't see it on there, give them the VIN and they can work it out.

Also, make sure they are actually broken before you order them :thumb:

Oh and try MB Grangemouth for the parts, although those springs seem quite competitive

Definitely a broken spring, have changed one and doing other one next week.
