Hi all just a quick question.

When did this car have a V6 rather than a Straight 6 engine?

Thanks

R

Thanks for that.

As BlackC55 says, mid-2005. It came with the 'Euro4' regulation compliance.

My 320CDI is not Euro4 - March 2005 - and is the straight 6, thank God.

If in doubt, look for the CO2 and BHP figures. When comparing the two set of figures, if the former is lower and the latter higher, it's the straight 6. Else it's the bent 6.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that why "thank god" are the V6's rubbish?

I'm feeling rather clueless following this thread as I have no idea whether my car is Euro 4 or whether the engine is straight or V6. It is also March 2005, has 201 g/km CO2, and 204 bhp. I'm surprised the answer isn't more obvious in all the documentation I have. I'd also be interested in the pros and cons of the two different types of engine.

Looking in the Technical data part of my manual, it says that CO2 emissions are 194g/km without complying with Euro 4, and 201g/km with compliance. So that means my car does comply, and therefore presumably a V6?

Open the bonnet, and you'll see very clearly whats looking back at you.

Alternatively your V5 will give the engine displacement. The V6 is a 3 litre and the I6 a 3.2litre. The V6, despite being newer is actually a substancially more thirsty car and its to do with the particulate filters etc.

Thanks, you're right V6 displacement is 2,987cc and I have 3,222cc, so it's a straight six. That leads me to thinking that engine type and complying with Euro 4 are unrelated. So what are the benefits of a V6, there must be some?

Its quiet.

The last in-line engines were advertisied as being offered as EU4 spec. They were more expensive and not as economical as the same engine with the EU3 specification.

It can yield a lower bonnet line. Lower CofG also.

Which then allowed it to be used in a lot more models in the Mercedes range, the ML being the most obvious. The jury is still out about the V6 being a better option and this decision was all about getting a 3ltr diesel into more types of vehicle. :o

TheOthers - I only said thank god as the mpg is better with the straight 6!

Also with the CO2 figures being better there is a chance that the VED bands could conceivably work in my favour if they decide to change them - say to a 200g/km cut-off.

At the risk of thread drift, I have always wondered about the new V6. As I understand it, the 280 and 320 variants actually have the same 3 ltr engine, but tweaked to give the 320 and strangled to give the 280.

How do new 320 owners feel about paying quite a bit more for exactly the same hardware as a 280?

As I could not have the straight 6 in my car, I feel very happy!

I think I'm right in saying that in Europe there was an E280CDI at the same time that the UK had the E270CDI. The European version had the 3.2 litre engine but in a lower state of tune (and/or different turbo) than the E320CDI. So same engine different tune didn't start with the V6.
