Hi

I had a leaking injector a week ago which was replaced by a local garage. The leak was on the exhaust stroke and was producing a soft knocking noise. The garage advised that I should have the remaining 5 injectors reseated; which I allowed them to do.

Problem: A strong smell of diesel from the time I picked the car up from this garage. I assumed this was as a result of spilt diesel just burning off however it is clearly unused diesel.

Took the cover off yesterday and found diesel at the bottom of each injector. If I clear this with absorbent paper then it is quickly replaced by fresh diesel. Car is running OK apart from the smell of diesel. The leak-off pipe appears to be OK. New bolts were fitted as part of the work on the injectors.

Question: Where could this diesel be coming from exactly? Is it the seal between the injector and head?

I look forward to any advice or pointers. Many thanks.

Are you sure it is not the leak off pipe?

Hi.

I've had another long look using a lamp for extra illumination and with the engine running. I can't see any weeping down fromn thew leak off pipe into the "well" surrounding the locking bolts (which is where the diesel congragates). It's clean diesel and I'm assuming I should be able to see it if it was the leak off pipe?

Many thanks.

Use some tissue and push it on the pipe. Does it pick up dampness?

Hi and thank you. Just had another long look. The leak off pipe is not emitting diesel. (I used your suggestion of using tissue.) I also mopped up most of the diesel from around the bases of the injectors and have had the engine running for some 20 mintes before replacing the cover. The problem appears to have lessened although I'm not certain that it is cured. I would think only a run-out will answer that.

The only work I have done myself has been to remove and reconnect the fuel feed pipe to No 2 cylinder. This appeared to be wet all around the union whilst the other 5 were dry.

I'll repost tomorrow as to any change.

Many thanks.

BlackC55 Hi
Problem fixed!

Cause was incorrectly seated inlet feed pipe to No 2 cylinder. Fuel was being emitted from the rear of the pipe i.e closest to the block hence difficult to see. Fixed Repaired by removing and refitting the inlet pipe. I note that this pipe had no seal of any kind just metal to metal. Is this correct?

Many thanks.
