Recently bought E320CDi (2002 model with 57000miles) has developed fuel seepage at front of engine/pump pipes? Have read various comments on this and seen the helpful pics posted. Also note MB issued a Tech Service Bulletin.
Anyone got that please?
What is the remedy? What should it cost to fix?

I had it on my E320 CDI and dealer fixed it under warranty as it is a recall.

So check with your dealer mate first.

Thanks John, very helpful.
So I conclude this is a manufacturing fault that MB are well aware of and I will ask if I qualify for remedial work at minimal cost...but I have little hope. Fortunately I have ben using the services of an ex MB mechanic with his own business for 6 years, so at least I get the job done well,
and cheaply. My previous MB was a 1984 E class estate that I kept for 13 years....what a great build and no problems...cannot say the same for my recent purchase where obvious savings have been made during manufacture. Guess who bought the old one.....the mechanic!

Hi Roger
I visited the website but perhaps I am wrongly inputting details as I found nothing. Can you guide me so as to find the relative item please?

These mechanics are not so daft as they sometimes make out. :o :o

The 211 can be a great car but it can have its problems. I wish you luck with getting the job sorted and I can confirm there have been a number of UK cars thatr have suffered this problem.

The link I gave you is US based as it is sometimes easier to get this type of information, but the problem is 211 based and not just American.

Rewgards,
John

Just had mine done on Saturday.....same fault, you must change the coolant pipes as they will swell if the car heats up in traffic.

Do you mean smell?

No .....the diesel contamination will make the pipes swell eventually and my mechanic (MB) said that they did a 211 and it got hot in traffic and one of the pipes split. They now change them if diesel has contaminated them.

Costs: Parts £125 which includes a broken undertray (around £50) so you will probably pay arond £70 for parts plus a fan belt if required.
My labour cost was £100 but this would probably be 3 times that at a main dealers as they wanted 1.5 hours to diagnose the fault when my car was in for new wheels. They also have to jetwash the engine and underside.
No diesel smell now when exiting the car.

Fuel leak fixed

Well, I hung on for months with the smell but no real sign of diesel until suddenly before Xmas I lifted the bonnet and was sprayed with a mist of diesel. Having taken out a Gold Warranty Direct policy I thought at least the cost would be covered for a repair by Mercedes. BUT no way, Warranty Direct wriggled out of that so I immediately cancelled their policy. Too many exclusions to give them the out.
So the remedy cost £314 inc VAT.
being £196 labour and parts £71 to replace leaking injector pipes at front of engine (to pump?) and a new belt.
Big Don

Have you checked the plastic tray under the engine? this tends to collect the diesel and might still have some smelly remnants :o

Sorry to hear about the useless warranty

Regards
John
