Evening all, I have a 2001 E320d with 126,00 on the clock. Last week the auto box failed. It was recovered to a Mercedes specialist and i was told that the box had failed. A reconditioned box was fitted @ £2200 and i collected on Friday. Today ( Sunday ) the box has failed again. The symptoms are a hissing sound followed by no power to the drive ( Like the clutch slipping if it had one) After 5 mins with the engine off it can be driven again about one mile and same again. Q. Has anyone got any ideas what could br the root of the problem. Many thanks. Andy.

It may be an engine problem not a gearbox one.

The hissing might be a split intercooler or boost pipe.

Is the ATF level ok?

Did they change the torque converter?

It must be something to do with the gearbox for all drive to be lost and the torque converter could be the culprit.
You would hope they fitted a new one for the figure charged.

What fault codes are there?

That is what I was thinking.

The hissing maybe unrelated.

I thought that the oil filter in the box was blocked when this first happened but the garage said that the oil in the gearbox was quite clean. You would think that the torque converter would be replaced for that sum of money and part of the exchange unit. back to the garage tomorrow. Andy

Recon box from mb £1500 +VAT

Torque converter ~ £700

Sounds like they maybe changed the wrong unit? What do you guys think?

Have now been told by the specialist that the Torque converter needs replacing. Am going to be broke very quickly at this rate. Just an update.
