E500 Engine noise is it normal?

Well I am new to ME world, as you know, just got a 03 E500.

I am just wondering if anyone knows if the E500 V8 is known for being noisy....

I think the E500 engine sounds a bit different compared to an old BM that I had, it sounds a bit louder and more metallic.... doesn't sound like a car engine to me. Maybe I am just not used to it.

can you guys hear your engine noise very clearly from inside the cabin ?

Maybe I am not used to the MB V8 noise... The inspection came back with nothing about engine noise...

Thanks for the tips in advance.

Cheers.

The 5 litre V8 in my SL was virtually silent. I've now had the centre muffler removed and replaced the rear box with an AMG one, and it's still pretty unobtrusive. I've never been in one, but I'd expect an E500 to be whisper quiet.

My Dad's W220 V8 S500 was quiet but upon acceleration would make a nice roar.

Best thing to do is go to MB and listen to the engine of one of their cars and if they do not have one available then ask for w/shop foreman to have a listen to your engine as well. If they do not have a demo car then they may possibly have a customer's car available for comparison of the engine note/sound.

The Mercedes smaller engines are generally a bit noisier and not quite as smooth as BMW engines, this has always been the case from the mid 90's.
however the 500 should be almost silent!

My engine is VERY quiet unless pushed then it can ROAR!

I normally drive at about 900 rpm to 2000 rpm (fine up to 80 mph or so)...

Have you tried getting into a similar powered model? It is impossible for you to describe a noise, and even more difficult to actually guess what it is your trying to say:)

Please do NOT think I am trying to be clever, far from it, I understand completely the reasons why your asking and hopefully you will accept my suggestion in the manner it is meant?

Regards,
John

this isn't an AMG engine though, it's the 'standard' 5litre

As glojo said, it's virtually impossible to offer any meaningful advice on noises, as it's very subjective. However, as long as you can't hear any SPECIFIC noises, such as regular tapping that increases with engine RPM (worn cams/lifters) or knocking (poss. bottom end wear), you're probably ok. If it just sounds a bit noisy and rough, it could be a worn timing chain or tensioners. Other than that, I shouldn't worry too much. Even serpentine belts can contribute quite a bit to the overall under-bonnet noise level if they're dry and cracked. To that end, try spraying a little WD40 on over the serpentine belt.

Cheers,
Ian.

What's a serpentine belt do? And are you sure it's a good idea to lubricate a belt - it must be doing something and that sounds like it would make it slip...

Hi Ian,
I hate to disagree with you, especially after you have justkindly agreed with my post.

I am very 'anti' WD40! Hopefully someone will now join in this debate and say I am wrong NOT to recommend spraying this application onto this belt?

Until then my advice would be don't do it. :)

Sorry about disagreeing

Regards,
John

Personaly i don't think the wd40 is a really good idea, a colleague of mine squirted some on a noisy voyager (3.0 V6) belt and it flew straight off, however i have done it myself, just a fine mist in the direction of the belt, and only for diagnosis purposes i.e. to find the noise.

Does this engine have a tensioner mechanism with a damper arrangement?

If so, if the damper is knackered it can make some very odd mechanical noises at tickover.

I've used WD40 on aux drive belts plenty of times in the past with no ill effects. Obviously, the idea isn't to drench the belt in WD40 but, as already mentioned, just a fine mist with the engine running to see if the noise quietens down. You can actually get 'belt dressing', which is basically a rubber lubricant and does the same thing.

Cheers,
Ian.

Yes , i have used a silicone based belt dressing in the past ...... works a treat ...

WD40 is becoming a bit like T-Cut.

"My car has a small scratch"

"T-cut it"

"My car has been in a major accident and written off"

"T-cut will sort that"

Lol, I wouldn't say WD40 (or one of its many clones) is all that, but as a temporary lubricant, penetrating agent, water displacer and tar spot remover, it takes some beating!

Cheers,
Ian.

Actually, that is not engine noise I guess, I can not hear the engine, just some higher pitch noise, which I believe maybe the transmission noise ?

It is not loud or anything, but I could hear it clearly, maybe I am a bit fussy...

Have not had a chance to try out another E500, not easy t spot another one. Maybe I will try out Splang's E500 one day.

As Glojo has said, it is impossible to describe a noise.

I did have the car inspected by Colin Ferns, and he said he could not hear any unusual noise....

So, maybe I am just picky, but the noise is definitely there, not electrical and not quite mechanical.

If I see a E500 on sale, I will definitely go and have a test drive....
