I posted here a few weeks back after doing my first *proper* journey in the new-to-me '07 E500 Sport, recording 37 mpg from home to Bristol and 36 back again(uphill) at a cruise control 60 mph.

Have just returned from an overnighter in Dumfries & Galloway, 337 miles each way with cruise control set 75mph in both directions on the M5 and M6.

Cold start, including road works and A and B roads-

Going: 35.7 mpg
Returning 34.7 mpg (strong side winds and hideous queue between J 11 and 9 M6/'M5).

I made the very same journey in my very fit 95 E300 D estate last year and got 38 going and 37 coming back, at similar speeds overall (no cruise control).

Frankly, who needs diesel? Mine's a 5.4 litre V8 petrol, thank you very much!

Interesting. I think these engines drop a lot compared to diesels when pushed at 80+

To be fair you're doing about the same mpg as my 300c estate 3.0 derv.

How does the 5.5 fair around town?

thats incredible mileage from a e500, My e320 cdi returns mid 50's and if taken very easy 55mph 61.3mpg thats brim to brim. ;)

Gotta love the tank range too

I don't think I've ever seen above 36 in any of my cars :o

I don't know how you guys have the patients to drive at 50/60, I just get bored after 10 miles of Eco driving

Whenever i go out ive usually got the tribe with me, Thats 5 kids and the wife lol, so what with that and the poor quality of the roads in the uk usually find 65mph is plenty.

12 mile each way trip to Newbury on A an B roads it's possible to get about 27, this keeping to posted limits.

As I am discovering, the nice thing about a torquey big lump like this is that it's possible to get a fair return without treating the throttle like a virtual egg shell.

Anyway. Enough of this. I am not an evangelist or wanting others to validate my purchasing decision. I just thought people might be mildly interested to see some real world figures.

Frankly, the old girl is not as thirsty as I had expected. It's nice, too, to have *adequate* shove at one's beck and call when the mood suggests a bit of bad behaviour.

:D

While I do realise there will be a difference from E class to S class, I wonder what the S 500 does for MPG, anyone know ?

I am keen to get my hands on an S 500, having in the past had many other MB models at some time in my driving years, it is time to go back to an S class I feel.

Nice choice. Was what I was searching for but failed to find in good enough nick. You probably already know (I did not) that air suspension - perhaps 50% of the S-class experience - is available on some Es. Mine has it. On good tarmac the primary danger is nodding off, so quiet and smooth is the journey!
