E500 Owners

I've done some better analysis on numbers of E500, using the data from howmanyleft.co.uk. I had to guess at when each new model came out though, so I might be a bit off.

600 of the W210 / S210 5.0 litre (2000 to 2003)
85 of the W211 / S211 5.0 litre (2004 to 2007?)
63 of the W211 / S211 5.5 litre (2008 to Q1 2009?)
154 of the W2112/S212/C207 5.5 litre (Q2 2009 to Q1 2011)
43 of the C207 4.7 litre TT (Q2 2011 to Q1 2013)

howmanyleft lists the number of each model sold per year, and after 2009 it lists by calendar quarter, making it easier to guess when each new model came out.

It doesn't show which body type out of the W, S and C, because Merc did not include that in the model name descriptor that it provided to the DVLA.

All in all, any E class V8 after 2004 was a very rare car! There are many more E55s (over 1000) and E63s (almost 2000).

I know the post 2010 S212 £500 model exists, but I've only seen it in Continental Europe - well, Germany, obvs. In fact I've never even seen an W212 E500 saloon in the UK.

I would certainly be in the market to buy one if I could find one in the UK, to update my S211, but my working assumption is that they can't be found.

Re the howmanyleft website, the year of registration against each model tells you which model's involved. It then conflates Saloons and Estates - my guess is that Estates are no more than one in ten, but it's only a guess.

Well, I know there are at least 2 of the S212 E500, because I have one and I saw one other on Autotrader in 2015. Logic suggests there are a few others out there somewhere!

I watch autotrader for E500s all the time (didn't lose the habit after watching for 18 months to find one to buy!) and for the last 2-3 years there have been always 8 or 9 C207 coupe E500s for sale, but only W212 4 saloons and the 2 S212 estates in all of that time. So there must have been 30+ coupes sold during the last 2-3 years. So my guess then is that the ratio could be 15:2:1 coupe:saloon:estate.

Since howmanyleft tells me that 154 W212/S212/C207 were sold (see earlier post), my guess then is there were about 130 coupes, 10-20 saloons and 10 or less estates.

43 of the C207 4.7 litre TT (Q2 2011 to Q1 2013)

How many of these do you reckon are the C207 4.7 litre TT cabriolets? I've only seen about half a dozen for sale over the past couple of years (including the one I put a deposit on yesterday!)

HI Guys

Sorry for the vague start, it is a Palladium Silver 2009 E500 sport Coupe with AMG styling (looked at AMG's but having had supercharged VXR8 I know how expensive things can get when they go wrong lol)

When I took her out for a test drive I was sold.

I must admit I do like the 2 sides to her, the sweet steady plod and then the mean kick butt side, just like me really lol.

This is just the reason I bought mine. The mix of serious performance without the high cost of AMG maintenance seemed like a great balance to me. I have even driven my car back to back with an E63 6.2 and in most situations there was not much appreciable difference. The E63 did feel more powerful of course but it was hard to find any road space big and empty enough to fully use it. Of course if money was no object I'd have one anyway for the fun of it but in the meantime the E500 does me just fine.....

Good question! They do seem very rare compared to the coupes; maybe 10ish of the total 43? I should have paid more attention to which C207s I have been seeing in Autotrader, but from memory most are 5.5 coupes. Only a few have been the 4.7TT coupe and even less have been the 4.7TT cabrio.

we may see more 4.7 coupe/casbrio's as their age increases. some current owners may be holding out for the new model due out this year (which looks great). qty's on 5.5 and 4.7 are single digit on Autotrader. I think there is 1 x 4.7 Coupe on at the moment.
I think one reason for the limited numbers in general is the E500 fully loaded in coupe form came in very close to (within £5k-10k) of a base C63 AMG. So most people would go for the 63 for not much more outlay, especially on lease.
just a thought

Does that mean I have a rare car lol, I have put it as a W212 but it is a coupe so have I got this wrong?? lol

Yes very rare with a V8 engine, and they stopped making them in 2013 so there won't ever be any more. I have no feel for what makes a future classic, but it seems to me that the E500 coupes / cabrios could become classics one day.

Confusingly the Merc model designation is C207 even though all other E class models have started with a 'W'. It might be because part of the underpinnings of the E coupe are from the C class but I've never been sure.

Fettling the E500 registration numbers

Sorry guv, (all due respect, don't like to challenge, and all those other internet caveats)

I think you've overstated the W210 numbers and understated W211 numbers.

Cars were launched in Autumn 2002, so there'll be a fair few included in the 2002 numbers - probably as Dealer & Demo orders. 2003 sales would definitely have been W211's and S211's.

It's worth remembering that the UK's a big market for diesels and AMG's. The V8 E500 sells in bigger numbers in the States where there's a huge group of people who buy the idea of a V8.

But all I know is it's figging difficult to update my 2004 car !

C207 because it's a variation on the C205

It's definitely C207 because it's on the C204 chassis (curiously not the C205). Just to confuse things, when it was developed, it was originally named the A207.

Bonkers that they call it an E Class, but hey, that's Marketing.

I think of it as a Pillarless C-Class Coupe :fail

A207 is the convertible
C207 is the coupe

Thanks! My knowledge of model change dates is pretty vague so all comments are welcome! Since the numbers are only available by year until 2007 I have now assumed that the change from W210 to W211 took place at the end of 2002.

Anyway, I have updated my spreadsheet so the numbers are now:

542 of the W210 / S210 5.0 litre (2000 to end 2002 - so maybe still a touch overstated)
143 of the W211 / S211 5.0 litre (2004 to 2007?)
63 of the W211 / S211 5.5 litre (2008 to Q1 2009?)
154 of the W2112/S212/C207 5.5 litre (Q2 2009 to Q1 2011)
43 of the C207 4.7 litre TT (Q2 2011 to Q1 2013)

Any more comments on model change dates are welcome to sharpen up the numbers a bit more...

And just for interest (if indeed anyone still has any, getting a bit nerdy now, I know) the numbers of E500 registered by year are:

2000- 138
2001- 217
2002- 187
2003- 58
2004- 40
2005- 28
2006- 11
2007- 6
2008- 41
2009- 119
2010- 54
2011- 34
2012- 11
2013- 1

The C207s are not E series cars at all, whatever MB chose to call them, and probably the better for it - lighter, more agile. I'd like one if I had one, I'm sure, but TDWMBO say I have to stick to (proper) E-class estates...

I just noticed there are two cabriolets on autotrader at the moment, a black 5.5 and a white 4.7tt (which might be the one you are buying, of course!).

I saw that white one come up this morning but no, it's not that one. - mine is coming from a Main Dealer - less money, less miles, 6 month newer plus a 1 year warranty and .... a massive spec.. HK, Nappa, TV, Driving Assistance Pack - (so Distronic etc) - extra airbags, comfort ventilated Front seats, Airscarf, DAB & a few other bits. :D

Sounds awesome! Hope you enjoy it - either for a while or maybe for a long time and see if it becomes a future classic? Since there was never an E63 version and there's probably only that handful of 4.7 cabrios, it could be a winner in the long term.

I know they aren't common but I found the E500 saloon prices a bit rich too when I was looking in the middle part of last year.
