Well I have tried the Carlsson Eco (3 versions) and now the Carlsson Power which all failed to do any thing at all. Apparantly mine must be one of the 4% of cars their product doesn't like ?! Shame as they were very plug and play - straight onto the ECU and apparanly do not mess with fuel rail pressure.

Has any one heard of these before, as they also do an 'Eco' version. Both the Dragon and DTE units plug into the Fuel Pressure Transducer on the common rail. Would this mean that fuel rail pressure is adjusted ? or could fuel amounts be set from there?

A more technical pdf on the dragon unit can be downloaded here, (watch the page numbers - they are all over the place !):

Any idea where the Brabus units connect to as they look like they have similar connections ?

As others have stated, a remap would be fine but could get written over by Mercedes. Maybe Superchip will bring out their Bluefin for the Mercs - enabling you to change the ECU map yourself.

Rica PPC is like bluefin - plug in, download your map, email to rica, they mod it and you re-upload. 220Cdi not mentioned but drop them an email.

Not had my merc remapped yet, but my Volvo was done by Rica and a massive difference from the original map, can't comment on economy as I drove it too hard to ever see more than 24mpg, often under 20....

Have a look at this one..........

Apparently MB dealers cannot tell if the car has been remapped using their method & I asked what would happen if it was overwritten for any reason, I was told they would do it again for free. I may get it done after the warranty runs out on mine.

Apart from reading the ECU version coding.

I can get these a a reasonable cost. Google dpt tuning.

Looks like all of these external units, including the DPT adjust the fuel rail pressure which I thought was not the safest way to get extra fuel into the chamber. - May be I'm wrong ??

The only one I know for sure doesn't adjust the pressure is the Carlsson.
Anyone know how the Brabus device works - can't find much detailed info on the web.

I'll give Rica an email and see what they say although their site seems very old, no cars newer than 2005 !

Muppetz - You'll have to let us know how you get on with yours when it's fitted !!

What about the C220 auto - any info on that box ?

I have noticed some of the tuners ask if the car is auto or manual - why would that be ?

Adam

The C220 has a 480Nm capable gearbox, so that's not too bad.

The calibration/dataset for automatic and manual gearbox vehicles is different.

Thanks, the most I've seen from these tuners is about 410Nm which is probably less than 400Nm in the real world, so no probs there then..

One other question, my C220 won't shift out of 3rd gear until above 32mph, so on the slow drag into town its constantly changing from 3rd to 4th and back again !! . Is this down to an ecu setting or the amount of torque in the engine. ? ie will one of these units enable it to run in 4th below 32mph ?

Cheers

I fitted a Van Aarken 'smart box' a couple of years ago. No difference other than more soot on the rear valance.

It obviously dumps more fuel into the engine but that in itself doesnt seem to have made any noticeable difference to the performance. The acid test would be to do straight run over a mile with/without the Van Aarken.

I think the way to go would involve boosting the turbo pressure as well as more fuel

Hi Adam,

It's the calibration of the autobox ECU that determines the shift points. What you can do, is ask the nearest Merc dealer if there's a software update available. There have been quite a few in the last year!

Regards
Matt

I had it serviced 2 weeks ago. Apart from putting too much oil in - warning message on the screen, they also broke the plastic engine cover and failed to tell me. They told me there had been no updates since the car was built, Jan 2007. S203 C220cdi. Are you saying they're wrong ?Cheers Adam.

I´m sure that for the engine ECU alone there have been several. I would try a different dealer, they seem pretty incompentent...

What you could also do, is ask to have the manual mode enabled in the gearbox software so that you can force a particular gear. Your C/S switch will then have the third option "M". I think that comes as standard with the steering wheel paddles, but works also without (our development cars have it enabled)

Thanks,

I have C/S/M on the switch already - probably because it has paddles as well. It won't let you shift up in manual either below certain speeds. Infact Manual and Sport mode will shift a couple of mph higher than it will allow in C mode.

I have booked it into another dealer for next week, guess I'll see what they can't do.

Also waiting on a bit more info on the DPT unit, torque/power curves for the 3 different maps they use.

Cheers

I've had 2 units from these chaps, both did nothing for my car other than cripple it to 3k revs... needless to say a full refund is on its way and whilst they were very polite and helpful I can't recommend the product.

They did seem to be v. confused as to what power my current engine is though - it is a w203 Sport Edition, 2007 - my c class handbook states 122ps for the c200 but the chap seemed to think that was incorrect ?

I'm still in the market for something to give me a little more umph and a bit more eco !

What was the unit called, doesn't really tell you on their site.

I have just fitted a DPT tuning boxe or Plugg it Drive it as they are also known. 5 mins to fit. http://www.dieselpowertuning.co.uk/ They should have power curves on their site next Tues/Wed

They set the parameters via a laptop to suit for power or power/economy. Had a look as the laptop settings. They set parameters for: When the pressure is upped, by how much and the max it allows. It also has a value for absolute maximum which the unit will 'clip' to for safety, + a couple of other values which I couldn't figure out - one called boost ?. The eco values start lower and have less of a maximum pressure figure - maybe a safer bet as well. These set figures are then used within it's map.

They recommend setting it to power to start. I'm going to try that for a week then get it changed to the eco settings and try that for a week as well.

I can feel more power straight away, 50-75mph is about a second quicker, I'll do a better test later and see how the mpg goes next week.

Cheers
Adam
