Just a bit of helpful information if you are ever in the position of having a blown ECU. Mine was from my 99 220cdi
Help is at hand. i had mine re-manufactured by Auto-tek in Poole.
They were very good, could read the encryption codes etc. ECU returned within 72hours.

£ saved (thank Dog) might be dyslexic

Auto-tex inspected ecu fixed cost £35. gather they have pretty sophisticated test gear. fault isolated which was in fact the entire circuit board, which they had quotes for within 24 hours.
total cost of test, repair and post £390, which considering would have been a write off cause most people can't get behind the codes represents a saving of about £800 over stealer....that's what i keep telling my wife anyway+++
I also found a company in Nottingham who were promising similar results.
Found both through google "mercedes ecu". Most wouldn't touch it because of codes and being common rail diesel.

My last quote from Stealers for an ECU for my 260E was £1600 plus vat
