Hello,

My P REG e230 failed its MOT due to emission levels? what does this mean? the engine needs work/tune up, or exhaust issues? I recently had a new cat 6months ago, could this be the cause?

Just a guess. Might need an 02 sensor and a tune up?

How badly did it fail and on what, HC or CO2 ?
How long had the engine been running before the test ?
The owner of the test station I use has told me that if they have an 'emissions failure' he tells the car owner to '...run it up the A12 for 15 mins and come back....' They re-test the car and it passes.

I was advised to give my car a good run before an MoT, clears out the cat and exhaust. Seemed to work for me

What are the co, hc, o2 and lambda figures on idle and fast idle. If you post these I might be able to point you in the right direction.

regards,

Job

Specific details are:

Fast Idle - c0 fail 0.4% vol
Second Fast Idle - c0 fail 0.43% vol
Natural Idle - c0 fail 0.52% vol
Overall exhaust emissions test fail

HC, lambda passed each time

So what should I do:
- give the car a good warm up
- stick some premium fuel in
- would engine oil make a difference
- change the air filter
- all of the above

Cheers

Don't know about the oil.
I use BP ultimate for a week before the test. But do make sure you take the car for a run before the re-test. Don't let it sit in the garage car park getting cold.

The output shows a rich mixture but really I think the actual Lamda value is required to show whether it's the fuel mixture or the Cat.

Lamda values below:

Fast Idle - c0 fail 0.4% vol
HC 33 ppm vol pass
lambda - 1.010 pass

Second Fast Idle - c0 fail 0.43% vol
HC 18 ppm vol pass
lambda - 1.001 pass

Natural Idle - c0 fail 0.52% vol
no lamda value

Any ideas Dieselman???

The mixture is controlled by the ECU and Lamda sensor so shouldn't be adjustable.

Before doing anything I would give the injectors a strong dose of injector cleaner and the car a good thrash.

The engine and valves are in good fettle judgiing by the low Hc reading.

Thanks for the help people. Finally got through the MOT. Went for a good drive with a tank of premium fuel, done the trick...
