Engine noise... bad!!!

So the clk (CLK200, facelift 2000 reg), has started making a strange noise, it sounds like its coming from the belt area... Anyone got any idea what it could be?

The belt tensioner or damper.

Take the belt off and have a feel of the pulleys, with a bit of luck it should be obvious which one is playing up

It is the expensive internal ones that bust the wallet you worry about!
Changed mine, the tensioner and got a great deal from ECP through this club

Belt tensioner or pulley should be easy to identify the culprit, also check SC pulley

Well ive ordered a belt and tensioner, will fit them on monday and hopefully that will be that, otherwise it will be going to the scrappy!

Are you just taking a punt on the tensioner or did you check the pulleys first ?

Taking a punt as the tensioned and belt were only £40 but I will check the other bits and bobs while the belts off anyway... The car was only £800 9 months ago and a rust bucket with a months mot left Now so not too worried about it!

ok... the top "pulley" (with the 4 bolts holding it in) in the picture is the one that is making the noise, upon removing the cover, when you spin it, it goes clockwise and makes a noise, but when you go anti-clockwise, it eventually grinds to a halt.

I take it the engine is kaput?! Thanks again for the help guys.

Not really - that's the water pump, you need a new one.

Hour or two's work and probably £50-100 from ECP/GSF etc.

Should have checked before ordering those bits...

Well the belt is all cracked so it will need replacing anyway. Cheers for the help though mate .

Your lucky your fan isn't attached to water pump. Otherwise you need big spanner and something to hold pump still while you loosen the nut.
Shud be a nice easy job for you and replacing the tensioner at the same time won't do any harm

Well it would be a job for me to do but the mrs has gone out for her friends bday, taken her keys, and cant remember where she put her spare :/!!!!!!
