2015 C220 AMG Line Premium Estate
Hi, just purchased a 2015 c220d amg line estate and there seems to be a bit of an odd engine noise in the car. However if you open the window the engine sounds fine. Window goes up and you can hear it.
Its hard to explain the noise but I get the feeling its just how the engine sounds travelling through the glass windows. Its a bit of a mettalic throaty engine noise.

Is this normal?

Impossible to say.

If you bought it from an MB dealer, why not ask if you can drive another similar car for comparison?

Check under the dash on the drivers side, where the steering column exits through the floor there is a large seal. On my car I had a strange noise almost like an inter cooler hose had feel off, sent car into dealer twice and they could find a fault.
After a year of living with it decided I could not stand it anymore and started car hunting to swop it, but could not find anything I was totally smitten with like the c class. So decided to hunt the noise myself as it seemed it was coming from near the foot pedals on the drivers side and could not believe my eyes as the seal around the size of saucer was not even attached to the floor so I had a gaping hole. Pushed seal back into place and it’s almost silent again so happy with the car again.

Hopefully your will be the same issue as easy fix.

mmm it could be normal, I have recently changed from an Audi 1.9tdi to the C class merc C250 (same engine as C220) The audi sounded very "Diesely" but the merc is very very different, I find the noise a bit unusual and it makes a sound of throaty , groany noise especially when cold. Seems better when warmed up.

I'm just getting used to it but it would be nice to compare the noise to others to see if its normal. I think it is. I jst get a bit of what i think is cam chain rattle when started from cold which is being looked at this friday by a local specialist.

Whats the milage on you new car out of interest?
Cheers

I have seen a couple of videos, same noise and one of the threads suggest the same fix as yours. Please let me know.

Update: Problem has been resolved. The cabin noise was coming in via the steering shaft and its boot (in the driver's footwell).

A tip to diagnose is this: This cabin noise comes in even when the car is stationary, a very subtle ringing (this ringing is definitely coming in from the HPFP). Just rotate the steering a bit and it will change in intensity. This helped me diagnose the problem. Giving dealership a heads-up on the issue saved time and money.

They quickly figured out the problem and ordered new part for me. They even pushed a cloth inside the shaft to test the hypothesis and the noise was gone.

Many people change their HPFP or Wrist Pins because of this issue. It is not so uncommon, many cars are suffering from this issue and people do not know a fix.

Hope this helps!
