engine number - where?

Hi all I have been running a 1986 230TE without any trouble for the past 6 years I love it.
But this week I bought my neighbours 1996 300 multivalve diesel.
In the service book there is a note to say that the engine has been changed.
I wanted to update the logbook with this infomation but cannot find the engine number plate. Mercedes handbook simply says to the front left of the engine as veiwed from the driver seat.
I gave up looking.
Anyone know where it is

It is not on the right hand side when looking from the front, so it must be just under the exhaust manifold on the block
