I recently repaired my oil pan on my 2007 c180 to do this. i had to remove the oil pan and reinstall it. Before this, my car worked fine. Now the problem is since doing this, i took my car for a spin to make sure everything was ok. Which is was untill i tried putting my car into reverse it kept going forwards so i turned the engine off now it wont start the dash lights come on and the steering lock comes off but that is it. Yet it let me push my car on my drive while in parkcould this be a sign that there is not enough transmission fluid as i dont know what could be causing this as it worked fine beforehand. Thank you for the help

The TCU will inhibit engine starting other than when in park. As Markjay has said you may have a problem with the pilot bushing, this being the only electrical connection between the gearbox and the rest of rhe system. A Star diagnostic session would help.

After reading your post again, one thing crossed my mind. The fact you can push the car in park rather points to a selector issue. When in park a pawl locks up the gear sets to stop the car moving. A communication problem between the selector and the TCU because the box is certainly not in park makes sense to me. Again a diagnostic check should go a long way helping fix the problem.

I've tried resetting the gear box, you know, the basic things you try first, and still no luck, not starting. I read some where it could be due to a shortage of gear box oil could cause this, but being sunday, nowhere is open. would do you think of that being the answer. Thank you

The engine will not start because the box is not in park, fluid level is unlikely to be your problem. the box relys on a signal from the brake pedal being pressed before you can move the selector from park, have you checked that ? Secondly there is an inhibitor that stops the engine cranking if the selector is in any position other than park. Your box is not in park beacause its not locked up ! more likely in neutral. If you can move the selector in/out of park without your foot on the brakes there lies the problem.

To be ultra picky, the engine will start if the transmission is in neutral as well as park.

I agree with a selector problem. Park physically jams a lump of metal in a gear on the output of the transmission to stop it moving. If the car can be moved with the selector in P there's a physical selector problem.
