Just welded up a small hole I found on the drivers side inner wing.. Now when I go to stop the car it doesn’t, the engine keeps on running. Coincidence?

I tried to see if I could find a fuel solenoid but had no joy. Is there one somewhere and if there is, is it electrical? Is this likely to be the problem?

Oh she’s been running on commercially bought biodiesel if it makes any difference.

Any ideas what or why it fails to stop when you turn the ignition off?

have you tried disconnecting the battery. negative first .
possibly problems with the ignition switch

I believe that the shut off is vacuum operated, and the storage tank is under the off side front wing, the heat could have melted a pipe

what is the car a 124 ?

Pull a fuel hose off to stop it

The stop solenoid on the back of the pump is faulty I suspect.

Edit: Actually listen to TV and ignore me. (must be tired)

A 1988 250TD W124 I think:D

Have you tried the manual shut-off lever . there is a gap where the inlets bend apart - put your hand in there and press down the lever with the red markings. Then the engine will stop

I think that you have a vacuum leak as the car was fine before you welded

OK so the pump is vacumm operated - explains why I can't find any electrical connections going to it!

One of the pipes definately runs up right next to where I was welding - I thought I'd shieled it well enough, but as these thigns go I ended up finishing in the dark!

Now I recall the headlight levels are vacuum operated as well, so the pipe going up the offside I assumed was for them - could it be the feed into the whole system inside the car - and any idea where they run to after?

Stupid question - but where can I buy a length of pipe and joiners from?

Your help, as usual, very much appreciated!
Matthew

PS I stalled the car to stop it, 5th gear, hand brake and foot brakes on and gently let the clutch out.

The best and easiest place is pet fish shop where they sell the pipe for the tanks.

Another handy way to join the pipes is all of the bathroom and kitchen hand spray bottles have the tube inside, I have managed to join up the pipes with these,by warming, they can be opened up by warming and pushing a spike down the center

one small extra point - I didnt see a vacuum tank under the off side wing - that was where I put a small patch as well. I had the wheel arch liner out and the washer bottle etc, but didnt see a tank - what does it look like please?

I said that I am not 100% sure on the tank and if you have one, if the pipes goes through the inner wing then you have, the 107 has but maybe yours does not.

This is the vacuum system for your car and it is not shown, usr the link bottom half

I think the tank you're thinking of is the one that's used for the gearbox mode switching - which does not apply in this case because the car is (a) a manual, and (b) an estate. Item 5 here, for reference.

Solved - no melted pipes - had just been too enthusiastic when moving the vacuum pipe and it had come off the back of the off side headlight.

I checked it was that by starting, and putting headlights on - noticed alignment didnt move with the control dial.

Popped it back on, ignition off and it stropped.

Thanks guys!

Flaming dangerous in the event of having a little front end knock and losing vacuum - you can't switch the thing off ?

Stopping a diesel engine

My 1996 300 diesel estate has a small black plastic stop knob on top of the fuel filter housing towards the front of the engine.
It has an arrow and stop written on it. Turn this fully closed and within seconds the engine stops.

I doubt that their engines are still running 3 years on....
