What does EPC mean on the little LED screen on a 300TD W210 - my mate's car gets it occasionally and the car will go through the gears but won't go above 2000rpm

EPC probably something to do with the electronic throttle / esp system forcing the car into limp home mode . Most common problem -faulty brake light switch!

Thanks Grober but the brake switch has been replaced.

He can get rid of it intermittently by pressing the R button[my similar vintage C280 doesn't have this] on the RHS of cluster

A quick google comes up with varying answers from 'Electronic Power Control' to 'Electric Potentiometer Control' or "Electronic Pedal Control" hence my suggestion it may be throttle related??
there's this from another forum
Upon further research on the web, I find out that Volkswagen and other Euro car manufacturers use an "Electronic Power Control" in their gasoline-powered cars which is a fairly complicated system for regulating throttle plate position electronically. The system takes input from accelerator pedal position, engine torque sensors, transmision, brakes, throttle plate location feedback, etc. and then drives the throttle plate motor to the proper position. Presumably, there is a similar functionality for controlling diesel fuel injection. Assuming that the Mercedes EPC is similar, there are quite a number of possible culprits for system malfunction.

Your mate needs to get the fault codes read to see what exactly is going on since it could one of many different faults causing the light to come on.

electronic power control (engine)
air mass meter, and or injector faulty

EPC came up on my dash as 'Electric Power Control'. Olly at PCS told me that can mean many things and to get the fault codes read to be sure. He checked my fault codes and came up with 'fuel pressure variation'. The fuel filter element was BLACK! He changed the fuel filter and the fault hasn't recurred. Top marks to Olly for an easy fix to a potentially expensive problem!

So, as others have said - get the fault codes read. Without doing that, anyone is just guessing!

I've posted the codes below can we have a look and see if anything jumps out.

Gordon you may have a point with Fueling - there is one fault with injection pump shut off valve

Sean - does the problem happen at larger throttle openings? Mine only happened if I was going around 60mph and floored it.

Doesn't seem to be - if anything giving it an Italian tune seems to help it[lasts longer between coming on]. However when pootling it seemed to come on more frequently.

Any idea what the R button is.......... reset???

Does this engine have a sensor on one of the injectors?

Gordon - :thumb:You may have nailed it:thumb: - he's changed one[the easiest/cheapest i assume] filter and it hasn't come on yet.

He's dropping his lad off in Ipswich[from Bolton 300miles round trip?] tomorrow so it will get a good run - should know when he gets back tomorrow evening.

Thanks for the different viewpoint - he was looking at gearbox for the fault [and thanks to Olly by association]
