My 2012 e220cdi has had an issue recently where no ignition lights come on and the car wont start. Greenflag came out today, chap checked battery voltage and all ok. He gave the area that the key goes a good whack and then the car started. He said the ESL is a common fault. Is this a DIY fix or specialist service? Thanks.

We have done both, repair and replacement. The only one we have done twice is the repair method.

Its a dealer only part and it can only be fitted by a garage with a genuine Star.

Good Indies can undertake (eg BlackC55). Suspect zero DIY chnace. Watch out for the people that say that they can reprogramme on the car ie man in a van types!

Part of the issue is getting hold of the parts - I was lucky and managed to buy direct from the dealer (in reality should not have been allowed).

W204 seem to suffer. Mine was a W212.

It is a relatively simple quick fix.

There is another poster on one of t'other forums (within this past week that had similar issue) unless it happens to be you.

Suspect that many MB indies are going to be busy with various electrical gremlins in a month or two when lockdown easing off.

Bringing this thread back to life again because Ive a similar problem on my w212 E250. Key goes in, ignition on, car doesn't start... normally i'd take the key out and try again and after the third or forth time it will start. Want to get it sorted though now before it gets worse as I use it for airport runs and i'm heavily reliant on it. Can someone explain to me if this is just a case of reprogramming the key again or does it need something else, and parts wise what is needed.

Cheers in advance

If you can't hear buzzing sound, servo motor fails (usually you get also other kind of warning about failure beforehand, buzz is more lazy than before). Either you replace motor DIY (like warned, its a bit tricky, everything must be at precicely correct/same postion than in the beginning)... that local thread I posted tells many successfull stories but also states difficulties. Another route is whole EIS from dealer.

Steering column gear selector is free from this fault.

Reviving the thread again - I have the issue of the ESL Mine is FSB4. Can this be done without main dealer?
