ESP Defective engine stops

I just got home and turned away from my driveway to reverse in and my engine stopped. There had been no warning lights before etc.

Then I could not start it, turns over just fine but doesn't fire (W211 E280 ESTATE). It turns over for a few seconds and then stops and displays "ESP DEFECTIVE Visit Workshop"

I did manage to restart it after leaving it for a while and tried pressing the ESP button in and turning the steering lock to lock. But after a short drive around the block it just quit again and again won't start.

Any ideas?

That’s a strange one, can’t think of any correlation where an esp fault would inhibit start procedure. Not unless it’s an ABS module fault and some immobiliser coding signal is not being received.

More likely an engine fault and subsequently causing the esp to come on as it’s missing a signal from the engine side.

Either way you will need to have a global scan done first.

Had a scan done and it's reporting a crankshaft sensor fault, camshaft sensor fault and o2 sensor fault....

Any ideas?

No codes in the esp??

If not then I would suggest sorting the engine codes out.

Cam and crank sensor faults together (depending on the actual code) sound like a possible timing chain issue??

But could just be one of them faulty,
When it doesn’t start you need to see if the rpm is showing any life in live data?

The O2 sensor will be separate and wouldn’t stop the engine.

My 2006 CLK280 is showing "ESP fault visit workshop" also indicating "run flat not available"
The car runs fine apart from that.

error codes
C1162
C1707
C1160

I expect it will be a faulty SAM unit. Had a 211 exactly the same recently.

Which SAM unit was it? I think the w211 has 3.

I have an E280, which doesnt crank over and has ESP display warning. From the number of error messages, it seems to be SAM unit as advised by the mobile mechanic.

It has two. The front one is the usual culprit.

Thanks, I'll pop my head under the bonnet, when it stops raining.

I think there is a module in the passenger footwell also.
