Hi Guys,
I am having a nightmare..... I have bought aftermarket cats from German Sweedish and French.
I was assured that the cats were of good quality and the would not rattle or sound tinney like other aftermarket cats and was assured that i should have the same sound as the original.
So on hearing this i purchased 2 x Cats for the SL and had them fitted.
After having them fitted i heard rattles from under the car so took it back and engineer found that the cats were not aligned properly. Got this sorted but still heard a rattling noise on accelaration.
After two mre trips to the garage, they put it down to back pressure causing a resonating sound between the cat and the manifold.
I then decided that i had been told one thing and what was actually happeing was another with regard to the noise. Went back to GSF and they advsied that i drive the car for 1-2 months and the noise will settle down, I did not accept this and decided that i wanted to buy new cats from Mercedes and would like my money back from GSF.
GSF are being addament that a resonating sound is not a rattle, as i explained to the regional manger im no expert and that if jo public heard the sound they would also claim it to be a rattle. My Engineer who fitted the exhaust has been in and expalined but they still not giving my money back!!!! I have subsequently been told that abnormall amounts of back pressure will cause damage to seals and the engine overall.... GSF have now asked for my engineer to write a report to submit to them, im really getting fed up now as it has been almost 2 months since the start of this saga....

Any views or suggestions appreciated

Raj

One possible idea, Contact your local council and ask for trading standards and they should be able to shed some light on the matter about returning the goods and getting your money back.
I hope this works.

Thanks,
I have wrote to them via email twice and spoke to the regional manager twice who is not the most polite person in the world. They have asked for a report from my mechanic so i will submit that and i also have a independent report aswell. see what they say.

rajinder, what does your full replacement cat system cost from MB? I might need to start putting money aside if it is as much as I think....

Birdman,
on my SL the cats will set you back around £1400 for just the parts then the labour on top...

Quick update GSF finally agreed to refund the money after many calls letters and emails to them.

Good Result.

Well done, what a result. Perseverance pays off... :bannana:

Good - stay on the case till the cheque's in the bank!
£1400 - that is very serious money for a 'wear' part (OK so the catalyst doesn't wear, but the matrix surely goes in the end).

I would love to hear of a reliable aftermarket supplier. Why can't they just do an exact pattern copy and get it right??

Not because it would have to retail at £1400 because, 'I don't belieeeve it...'

Try your local kwik-fit, I had a pair of cats on my SL replaced at £289 eac, fitted with 12months warranty. The guy who quoted me the price made a mistake but they honoured it, even tho it was just one that was gone, at that price I had both replaced.

At that price I might have ordered a spare set!!
Did the exhaust note change after fitting the kwik-fit cats?
Do you know roughly their correct price btw?
