Just got 2016 CLA 220 D AMG and the engine management light is on. Fault traced back to Exhaust flaps - the actuator has been replace but still have the same problem. Checked exhaust pipes and the exhaust is coming out from both sides so kinda tells me the flaps are stuck in the open position. Due to get car mapped to stage 1 and was thinking about just getting the flaps deleted - has anyone done this? Is it ok to do this. A few mechanics have said it’s ok to do.

Dont think any exhaust flap fault would cause an EML to show , but i stand to be corrected.

Does the car actually have a "valved exhaust system" , if so can you see / hear them opening / closing ?

Is it not the "swirl flaps" actuator on the engine that was replaced ?

I didn't think diesels had exhaust flaps??
Usually a (proper) AMG feature to open the flaps for a louder exhaust.

Do you have a button on the console to open and close the exhaust?

This is my exhaust you can see the actuator, which was replaced. It has one flap.

No button as such but I can select different modes, sports mode is meant to open the flap.

The light is amber which I believe is a soft warning but still puts the car in limp mode.

I gather that you have seen this thread :

Has the car been "re-scanned" since the the new exhaust and valve were fitted ?

hi drew..
i believe my car is the same 2016 GLA 4 MATIC 220, I previously had the egr deleted, went on a 500 mile trip a the weekend and lmp mode came on 10 miles from home, the EGR was replaced in april and in march the exhaust flap was showing faulty by mercredes , anyway its showling the exhaust flap code now P13c2
did u ever get your sorted?

I had exactly same problem with my Q30. Dealer replaced my flap, but still engine light came back, but not as often. Apparently a few burned cables touched the exhaust pipe and shorted to ground. It was in front of the bend that goes up to the engine. You'll need some cables, heat shrinks and cable ties to sort this out.

sounds logical.. anyway the mechanic kept the flap open with welding wire,, no light since, the motor piece is £179 inc vat , and the exhaust piece incl motor is £274 ex vat, I will wait until it needs it i think.
appreciate the reply

I had to go to Nissan dealership. Parts and labour was £1000+. I think flap assembly with some exaust piece was £900, had to wait a month to get it delivered from Japan. Luckily the dealer I bought the car from paid for that :) Exactly same spec and model number as MB, but they are not allowed to use MB supplies. Now I'm having problems with my rear diff. Needs oil change and all that, but Nissan don't do them as they don't make AWD, and their diffs are sealed for life. 1l of oil costs £140 for transmission and diffs :/ MB service don't want to do anything with Infinities, even if 90% of q30 is genuine MB.

And xtrail. But they are completely different spec compared Q30S AWD, which is basically MB x156 (220d just Nissan body styling, ECU and few other bits. Even the tires are MOE run flats, Nissan wouldn't change them as they don't even have machine to mount them on the wheel). Gtr use different oils, filters and so on. After Europe Infiniti collapsed, all the service got dumped onto Nissan. They had Zero training on Infiniti cars, and even them don't really want to service Infinities. Had similar problems when Rover went bust, noone wanted to fix my 75.

are you saying the GLA 220 d (mine is a 4matic) is the same engine as a nissan xtrail?

No. I'm saying my Infiniti Q30s AWD is like 220d 4matic. om651.930. Drive shaft, gearbox, differential, exaust, steering wheel, even the key is exactly the same.

Renault/Nissan and MB have had close links ... e.g. the MB X Class pickup was based on the Nissan Navara, the MB Citan van is a re-badged Renault Kangoo, and Renault's 1.6 litre engine is used in the FWD Vito. The same 1.3 4-cyl engine used in the Citan/Kangoo is also shared across a whole raft of cars including the MB A & B classes (and GLA/GLB), Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail, a bunch of Renault models, and (I think) a Dacia or two.
