Experian Vs HPI

Hi All,
During this whole process of trying to sell my CLK I came across a possible stumbling block.
When I went to my local Lotus dealer and was talking about a possible P/X against my CLK I saw the salesman punch my Registration number into some database and he then told me it wasn't showing?
I didn't think too much of it as I wasn't about to do a deal with him anyway.

When I originally purchased the CLK I ran my own HPI check against www.hpicheck.com and the car came through clean.
It showed the previous cherished plates that were shown against it as well as the current plate it has now.

Anyway, I had a potential buyer who then asked a friend of his in the trade to run a check against it and he said that it wasn't coming up in the database. I then went back to the Lotus dealer and asked them which company they use for these sorts of checks. It turned out it was a company called Experian.
I then phoned up Experian and explained the situation to them and read out the previous plates against the chassis number. The first and second plates tied up but they had no further of records after that!
So they are now fixing the problem but it could take 2-3 weeks for the databases to catch up.
I am unable to contact the potential buyer easily and this could result in a lost sale.
Grrrrr! So someone is paying good money for bogus information as well as me losing a buyer.
Mac.

Experian, is this the Credit Reference Company ?
I guess so?
I wasn't even aware that there were any other companies that did these sorts of checks.
I was told the name by the dealer but he also gave me a phone number which I rang.
They answered as Experian.
Makes you wonder if there are any more companies?

There are a number of companies that do HPI/vehicle checks but my guess is that they all access the same databases.

They obviously do not access the same databases or else there wouldn't have been the discrepancy in the first place.

I use experian and they are usually great...

was there a recent plate change? These take a whille to update.

Experian-DVLA link is often not up to date and they do need a kick up the ar$e...

however i cant see why a potential buyer would be put off. You give them your hpi certificate and write on the receipt that you gaurantee the car is HPI clear...

The plate change (there were 4!) that is causing a problem was back in sep 03!.
The potential buyer is a long way away and I guess he wants to be sure that he isn't going to have a wasted trip. I have tried to re-assure but his m8 doing the check is telling him to steer clear (I guess this is understandable who would you trust your m8 or some stranger telling you all is well?)

I don't mean to be rude but did you read my first post?

mac,
even if the reg number doesnt come up you can do the hpi check with a chassis number... that will show that the car is clear of any history at least...

Thanks Jay,
I know this and I did mention it to the prospective buyer. I have a feeling that he is giving me the run-around though.
He has told me to 'let him know' when the error in the Experian database is sorted out. Personally I think that he is just waiting to see if I drop the price any further. Or he has some other plans but doesn't want to discourage me completely. In all honesty I don't know what hes playing at.

The purchaser has to have the HPI check in their name for the guarentee to be valid.

Although Experian are now a huge company they haven't been offering vehicle checks as long as HPI and their databases can be lacking.
