Explanation of model designation

I'm very new to Mercedes driving, and although I've done a quick search, I can't find a list explaining the Mercedes system of model designation. Does one exist?

For instance, I drive a C220 saloon, is this W204?

Many of the posts on here use a W number, and I'd love to be able to picture the car being discussed!

Hi I found an earlier thread with a Wikipedia link you might find helpful. I know what you mean - I'm just about on top of the model codes for fairly recent e, c and s classes but beyond that they might as well be speaking in German a lot of the time!

Just go straight to Wikipedia's timeline, and click on the model numbers as needed.

You can find the W (or R) designation of your car from the VIN plate at the base of windscreen, passenger side.

If it starts WDBxyz....... you have a Wxyz
