Extend the Warranty ???

Been driving my 2006 E320 CDi Sport Estate for a year now, and its 'used car Warranty' is about to expire.

Absolutely love this car, and it drives like a dream, and as Im due to be keeping it another 2 years, I'm wondering whether to stump up for another years Warranty would be a good move ?

What is making me a little nervous is the fact that it has been in twice in the last year for warranty issues, the first time for a faulty Turbo inlet manifold sensor or something, a common issue I understand, and which resulted in MB fitting a new Turbo too, and for which the bill 'would have been' £3k + !

Second time was a fault with the Airmatic suspension, - traced to a leak in the air hose finally, so not as big but still would have cost me a chunk.

So, have I been unlucky I ask, or is the £950 for another year Extended Warranty going to be money well spent.....

Thoughts anyone please ?

How can you ask if a warranty is a good idea when one claim alone saved you £3000!

It's a no brainer :dk:

My car has only covered 16,300 miles and I have just taken out a Tier 1 Merc warranty.

What price peace of mind.

JLR - I'm not asking if its a 'good' idea - i know it is, but at £998 from MB, its a lot of dosh.

Having said that, - bingo999's suggestion is quoting £636 for 2yrs Cover/5* Warranty, so is a heck of a lot cheaper. :bannana:

You get what you pay for. Cheap warranties have enough small print to ensure they hardly need to pay out. The MB warranty covers most of the things that can cost mega bucks. Some are happy to keep the money and take the gamble that what you save will cover repairs. Others like the peace of mind and do not want to risk a bill of several thousand. I tend towards peace of mind.

Once you pass the first three years and the manufacturers warranty, depreciation drops dramatically and keeping the car -even with an MB warranty- is cheaper than changing and keeping in the first 3 year warranty.

I will be renewing mine in september :) Also I would pay more for a car with a MB warranty if buying..

When my ML warranty ran out, I wanted to buy an extension and MB quoted me around £1,500. In the end I settled for Warranty Direct and paid around £650 for their Luxury Policy which covered just about everything, probably better than the MB policy.
It paid for itself almost immediately when an oil leak was discovered during MB service, and the bill was north of £1,000. I thought an oil leak would never be covered by the warranty, but because it was discovered during a service, it was and WD paid up, no problem. Don't ask me why, it was just one of the benefits.
One tip, if you do go to WD don't accept their first quote - if you show a little disappointment they have discretion to reduce it, I believe. When they wanted to up my premium for the second year, I queried it and they immediately reduced it again without question!!
Good luck

I have been quoted £549 by Warranty Direct for their Extra Care Policy for 12 months. Seems to cover just about everything apart from the obvious ie tyres brake pads/discs and exhaust The original quote was £712 Thoughts please guys and gals :)

If you do go warrenty durect then make sure they cover main dealer rates, in car hi fi (includes comand), go through your tier 1 booklet and go through all the items if need be to cover yourself.

I personally have tier 1 and have claimed back the money in repairs over the last 6 mnths, they didnt however cover my tyre pressure sensors.

Im in two minds like you if i should renew next year, but the peace of mind that any major repair is already paid for is worth the amount!

I have read through the booklet and it seems to cover a lot. However having had bad experiences with warranties in the past I am very wary. They seem to get a very mixed review on forums From great to apalling

I have warranty's with WD for the CL55 and the S-Class.

The A/C condensor on the CL,just received a cheque for £ 746.00. Very impressed so far.

Let's see;
In 1 year, my W211 CDI has had
New turbo
New command
New entire driver side mirror (innards)
2 new rear springs (MB payed most for this; I payed about £60)
So....
What I want to know is; when can I pay up for next year!
If i were to get a new gearbox, and that should be a new car really!!!!

I live at the end of the road, in a one horse town... The horse died a while ago, and now someone's nicked the trough as well....
Seriously though, if I were closer to a good indie; I would hedge my bets, save my money and pray I'd end up quids in. But as I'm firmly in the clutches of my friendly stealer ( who have been very good to me actually) I can't recommend the merc warranty highly enough!

Some of the third party warranties expressly state that they do not aim to leave you in a financially better position and so look to reduce the amount they will pay out according to the age of the car!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't believe it! .... Would be ok if spares cost less as the car got older!
Read the fine print ( I'm sure u will) ;-)

I know what everyone is saying about MB Main Cover etc, but its damned expensive @£998/yr.

Interestingly, I spoke with a local Merc Indy about his labour rates, as Car Protect/Motorway Direct plc only cover £40/hr labour costs, and I asked him which companies if any were more reliable in the Warranty sector etc.....
He replied that the 'AA Cover is pretty good, not usually any quibbles'........and after checking, who provides that Cover for the AA ??
Motorway Direct Plc, who sell the Cover I am considering - CarProtect.co.uk.

Additionally, the 'Wear & tear' clause does concern me, but clearly stated on their wording is that 'No Claim will/can be rejected on any vehicle which has done less than 60k, or is less than 5yrs old." Mine isnt that until Nov this year, so seems I have complete peace of mind until at least then.

Does the level of cover not deminish as the miles go on.

I have this choice coming up and MB tier 1 will be about a grand, but my cars milliage will be above 60k so only elidgible for tier 2 which covers less.

If I suspect a major problem, I'll just px it into them and get another.

Cover remains the same for unlimited mileage once Policy has been taken out.

Actually - my bad - it says ''No Claim will/can be rejected on any vehicle which has done less than 60k, and is less than 5yrs old"

Damn. :(
