Is the external temperature a standard fitting on my 230CE? There is nothing showing in the space provided and I've not been able to locate a sensor that I would assume is at the front bumper somewhere.

The sensor is located in the front bumper behind the number plate if fitted. Just take off the number plate and you should see if its there. Unfortunately the external temperature gauge was not a standard fitment on the early and late 4 cylinder cars AFAIK. A retrofit is entirely possible using MB parts, but while the sensor is relatively cheap the display unit is quite expensive. A breakers yard is a possibility I suppose. the later display units ( post 87) are better since they have a built in compensation for road speed.
