I suspect Zandvoort will need some investment although I liked the circuit when it was used previously for F1. Set amongst the sand dunes there are natural elevated views for spectators. I was there in 76 watching James Hunt win in his championship year.

Aren't they all now?....

Sandvoort (deliberate) will make for entertaining races when the sand blowing across the track removes all semblance of grip.

Zandvoort confirmed for 2020- down principally to a resurgence of interest in the sport because of Max Verstappen? Hanoi in Vietnam also on the list. The irony of an American media company implementing this when they used to bomb it nightly [ known as Ho Chi Minh city during the Vietnam conflict] will be lost on many younger forum members.

...As will the fact that the team which has had one, two finishes in all the races this year is a German owned, British based and staffed internationally.
Now what were we doing back in the early 40's? :dk: The world moves on. Thank goodness.

Hanoi was always called Hanoi, and was the capital of North Vietnam during the conflict, and is now the capital of Vietnam. When Vietnam was reunited, the capital of South Vietnam, formerly known as Saigon, was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City. So I doubt the Americans used to bomb Ho Chi Minh City every night - unless they were really stoned.

I still have this feeling that the American Air Force nicknamed it Ho Chi Minh City or Alley or something similar during the conflict but possibly my memory playing tricks on me. You are right Saigon is now Ho Chi Minh City post conflict. Fortunately it was one Far Eastern conflict we were never directly dragged into by the USA, maybe because we had our own post colonial troubles to deal with- or maybe we still remembered Suez.

remind me - what is the link between Bomber Command and where your current car was made

.....He didn't qualify, after having an average speed deficit of just 0.019 mph

From the back of the grid...

Doesn't/didn't have the car under him this year. Maybe next year on the assumption that they (McLaren) now have something that looks like a reasonable car and don't boot out Lando Norris to let Alonso have an F1 seat again. He's not interested in competing for last place (and who is?), but in a decent car who knows?

Not really sure why it has suddenly become popular to achieve the triple crown.
I count as a friend somebody who has achieved something much more exclusive: to be the designer of a cars which have won Monaco, Indy and Le Mans.
As the disciplines become increasingly specialised, Tony Southgate is the only person ever to do such a thing with BRM, Lotus and Jaguar respectively.
First and only.....now that is properly exclusive!

I always thought that the 'triple crown' was winning an F1 championship, Le Mans 24hrs, and Indy 500. Alonso qualifies to challenge at Indy on either interpretation, but was I wrong or has the definition changed as it has for what constitutes one billion?

Back in the day, it was always about winning the 3 most famous races in the world. I'm not sure if or when the F1 Championship was substituted for Monaco, or indeed if anyone sets the rules!....but as motorsport people, they will always be one step ahead of the rule makers:p

Yes he definitely didn't have the car underneath him. Crashing in practice and then 5 poor attempts in qualy left him in 31st place. McLaren then changed the set up one last time and he just got knocked out - only one run allowed for the last 3 spots and he got bumped by the last driver in a much smaller team

I wondered about that too. Maybe the cachet of Monaco has slipped - and paticularly when selling the idea of a 'triple crown' to a US audience then the concept of F1 championship - particularly given Lewis Hamilton's profile in the US - is an easier sell in that market - particularly when it's the Indy 500 that's the last bit of the triple and that's where the publicity / value currently lies.

Triple Crown of Motorsport - Wikipedia

It seems there are two versions of the TC. One uses Monaco, the other a F1 driver's championship.
Monaco is the more recent I think but Graham Hill (it's only winner) qualifies on either count. Current drivers still trying Alonso qualifies on either definition, Montoya only on the Monaco one.

Well, here I am last week surrounded by triple crown designer Tony Southgate and triple crown endurance winner Andy Wallace.
I've only engineered 8 Le Mans class wins including 3 overall wins....I don't even have any dental crowns:rolleyes:

Do Ferrari know it's supposed to be a two car team? They behave as if it's Vettel and 'that other bloke who drives Seb's spare car'.

Even by their own high (low?) standards, today's qualifying was a clusterf**k of gigantic proportions.

^Astonishing from Ferrari. LeClerc must wondering just what kind of Mickey Mouse outfit he has joined. Whoever decided to leave him in the garage instead of sending him out on-track (Jock Clear?) needs to consider their position.
