I pulled up at Halfords on Friday and there was a Ferrari outside. Sure it caught my eye, but to be honest it's one of the very few cars on the road I couldn't tell you the model of, the 355 was the last Ferrari I thought looked good. It was not more than a few years old though.

Anyway, the young guy that owned it was having one the Halfords staff fit some new windscreen wipers!

For some reason I am sure the guy is local, which rules out him being caught away from his local turf and needing some new wipers in the showers. It just seemed odd.

I cant figure out if he is clever for going to Halfords and not being ripped off to fit wipers to his car - I guess wipers are wipers or if he was a bit barking.

However, Premium Bonds having come up, me owning a Ferrari, I cant picture myself down at Halfords letting the checkout boy fit my wipers!! Where does this stop - would I take a Porsche to Halfords? Would I let one of those guys fit wipers to a Fiesta? Probably not.

It just didn't add up and has clearly been bugging me for 3 days now! LOL

Oh, it wasn't a kit car either!

Obviously more money than sense :D

Gosh what a frightening thought, some oik fitting blades to a Merc

We don't use Halfords because we know better, and have some car skills - remember there are plenty of people with no car skills, no knowledge of servicing the motor, etc. Halfords has a role to play.

As for the Ferrari owner - plenty of them with lots of money, no driving skill and no motoring knowledge. Key turns on and off, petrol goes in here. This pefdal makes fast, this pedal makes slow.

Saw a gorgeous black 360 Modena on Sat eve that I was sat benhind - the engine sounded so beautiful and that was just it being idle without any reving at the lights. From behind the 360 is pretty but the 355 Berlinta/Spider is my favourite.

In numeric terms I think there are more Porsche owners of this type around my way than Ferrari owners, but it is the same problem even when it comes down to very obvious things.

This very weekend I went to the local Sainsburys/Homebase Gulag which has the obligatory huge fuel outlet complete with two monster car washes. There, before my very eyes, was a silver 54 reg. Porsche 911 Carrera 4S being subjected to the grit encrusted flails, noxious chemicals and the iccky "wax".

Now I know these things have improved, but please....

I don't know whether I should reply to this for fear of ridicule….

One of my wipers split in pi**ing down rain a couple of weeks ago, it’s 5.30pm so where do you go – Halfords. The best (most expensive) Bosch wiper set for my car was £19.99, fitting £2.99. Sure I could fit them myself but did I want to get wet and dirty for not much more than the price of a pint?

Took the guy 5 minutes, half the time it would have took me :D

No ridicule - same thing happened to me just after I got my Merc 3 years ago and didn't know how to change the wiper so I went to Halfords - had the whole team of 3 out there in the pouring rain for 40 mins - they couldn't do it either - went to see my Polish Mr Fix-it mate in his backstreet workshop next day - 1 minute, done

Hey, I've called the AA to change my wheel, more than once too. Why have a dog and bark yourself?.....

So have I but at least the AA are made up of professionals, can we say the same about most of the staff at our local Halfords?

I've encountered some right weirdo RAC patrolmen (as they used to be quaintly called) in my time - some downright dodgy - as well as the occasional conscientious, knowledgeable guys, so it's a toss-up who you'll get. Very few of them seem to like their job much & I doubt they'd survive long in a proper workshop or with an actual boss rather than a job dispatch mobile data terminal. Thankfully they're strictly for emergencies, but I still don't like their "you'll get what you're given" attitude

Bosch wipers for SL R129

I have fitted Bosch wiper from Halfords to my SL works as good as original and a lot less than the Stealship would charge, but saying that I bought an oil filter for a M103 engine from the local MB stealership for £4.94+vat which is good value, original equipment, and probably less than Halfords would charge. The guy at the dealers said that MB had brought some of its prices down to compete with the likes of Eurocarparts etc.
