I just read a thread about a poor family that had there house broken in to for the car keys for there beloved E55 AMG and it got me thinking ,, I use my fingerprint to unlock my I phone ,so why can't car manufactures use this technology on cars or maybe a pin number ..it would stop people getting the houses broken in to ... I think I could cope with having my car stolen but to have my house broken in to with my family in would be hard to live with

They'd cut your finger off to get the car.

Citroen used pin numbers in the 90s.

It's biometrics... no biggie from the tech point of view, but potentially an issue for MOT testers, service garage staff, and valet parking attendants... I suppose you could install it so that you can disable it at will.

..or you could just hide the keys at night?

And next owners.

Thinking about the VED thread I reckon fingerprint technology would explode a few heads.

There are several cases where people have been quite severely beaten to reveal the location of their keys (amongst other valuables), what makes you think they wouldn't drag you outside, or worse, remove the appropriate finger?

I had fingerprint recognition on an Audi S8 I used to own.

Keyless entry and the start button was a fingerprint reader on the centre console. The only thing it would do was recognise the driver and adjust the setting accordingly though. That was if it decided to work at all, as it was an absolute nighmare to set up and place your finger "just right" on it, so half the time it didn't do anything apart from start the engine. :(

As others have said, it would be totally impracticable to have it as a final security device unless there was a built in feature to disable it which, if this was implemented, would make it pointless anyway.

A shot gun lol

I think I will leave my keys on my dog collar from now on and park down the street so they don't know it's my car ,,,surely there is some way because getting burgled has got to be horrendous ..the days of them jimmy the doors open and hot wireing have gone

I had the pin pad on a pug 106. Good device but a pain havin to enter it if you turned the car off for any period of time.

We were broken in to a year ago. Mrs came home to a totally ransacked house, where even the toddlers bedroom had been torn apart. Watches, iPads etc etc all left. Only item taken was spare key to the Mrs ML which was well hidden. In reality should have left spares by the front door. The interesting thing is that while the home insurance covered the broken window they came through, neither car insurers or house insurance covered having the old key removed from the system or a replacement. However the car insurance co said car no longer insured until we had the keys (and locks changed). All in about £600. Now have additional key cover on my policy (plus ADT and more security lights indoor and out then you can shake a tick at).
