First drive: 2016 mercedes amg gle 63 s coupe 4matic

Personally i cannot see the point of having an AMG engine with SUVs. They are too big and never will be sports cars... Best to either stick with a proper sports car or get a proper SUV. I agree, I am not too keen with this shape which reminds us of this awful BMW X6...

Hi,
We thought the same and test drove a CLA45 but thought the interior quality was not as good as the bigger cars in the range.
There was a deal on the ML63 with the optional performance pack (557hp) - so we decided to get that - 20% off price with 1.59% hp sealed the deal!
Having such a powerful car with adaptive suspension and all the other safety features is great in Abu Dhabi - where general driving conditions are fast and a bit erratic.
For me - having a large car that can accelerate away from the lights so quickly is an absolute hoot - especially in Sport mode with all the bangs and whooshes!
It really surprises other sports cars that you come across - so happy to have an AMG SUV!
We also have a two door coupe - which is much slower (only 330hp) - but obviously goes round corners a bit better!
Have not seen a GLE coupe in the flesh yet - looks a bit odd from certain angles.
Cheers
Steve

Most AMGs aren't sports cars IMHO, more like a hot rod, and AMG can make a hot rod out of an SUV just as well as it can a saloon :thumb:

I see this car is causing controversy! Excellent :D Who wants to have the same as everyone else's :dk:

I on the other hand am very much looking forward to (dubious?) honour of being the first person in the country to get one of these next week :D

In fact, this exact one which today was having all the factory-fit scratches removed

These cars are almost soooo wrong on so many levels.....and quote honestly, that's much of the appeal :o

But on a serious note, until you've driven one of these performance SUV's you just can't appreciate just how capable they are. I certainly didn't get them until I drove one a year ago....and since then I've had two ML63's and am now a believer! Indeed, I regretted swapping our ML63 for the (arguably superior driving) E63 the minute I drove away in it. As fast road cars the combination of performance, luxury, quality, comfort, visibility and feeling of engineering depth in these SUV's is mighty.

Even the roadholding is outrageous - sure, it'd make a sh!te track car but only because of it's weight and CoG. On the road, the active suspension keeps these top-end SUV's flatter than any sports car I've had...which in turn makes it feel tremendously secure and planted at almost any speed you'd dare drive at on public roads.

Everyone seems to argue that the diesel versions of these do the same thing but without the expense....but then they don't do they? They won't have the fancy active suspension or the aural characteristics or the performance when you want it.

I've been lucky enough to have had some nice cars, but the ML63's (and I'm sure this new GLE63) were right up there as some of the most satisfying and best built I've had.

I'm really looking forward to your usual new car write-up on this bad boy!

Well I think the GLE63s looks fantastic, and I would have one in a heart beat if I could afford to stretch to one.

Hi,
That is one mean looking motor!!
You expanded on the points that I mentioned above about how well made the ML63 is - compared with some of the smaller AMG models and even the E63.
Funnily enough - I got an opportunity to drive a one month old E63 which had been updated to 800hp just the other day.
Whilst it was very fast - I did not like the comfort or feel of the car compared with my ML and especially did not like the buttons, gear lever and controls around the centre console. I find the column lever for controlling gears, combined with the paddles - so much better thought out on the ML.
My only criticism of the newer models is this large afterthought tack on centre screen that sticks out above the dash line - it looks like they have stuck an iPad in the cars with some duct tape!
Look forward to your review of your new GLE!
Cheers
Steve

Looks great Andrew. Didn't you delete the factory scratches option ?

Enjoy

I think it looks great, love the black on brown.

The world would be dull place if tastes were the same; I like that for many reasons, including exclusivity and rareness.

I think I'm right in thinking this design was inspired by the Paris-Dakar cars of a few years back.

The R63 was rare and exclusive too...

True, but the rest of the world was wrong on that one. The handful of people who bought one were right I reckon. Sleeper and practical.

Andrew, what's happening with the GTS. Are you still getting it, or is the GLE replacing. If not MB Derby must look forward to seeing you. I am also thinking Of getting one but not the 63 AMG, was thinking of the 450 AMG. Should have sufficient performance for me.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the car soon.

Paul

Premiership footballers will love it...

Well, funny you should say that.

Now, I know nothing about football but the previous owner on the V5 of our ML63 was Christian Benteke (Aston Villa?).

Then, this GLE I've bought wasn't actually Derby's car - it was heading to their Liverpool branch. When I placed a deposit, Derby transferred it over, only to receive a call from Liverpool saying they'd sold it to Liverpool football club so needed it back for a 'special customer'. To be fair to Derby, it seems they told Liverpool to do one (or found another car) because I'm the one getting it.

I am told that Christina Benteke has just transferred to Liverpool so highly possible the car would have been for him. Who'd have thought that!

Hi Paul, fear not the GT is very much still on it's way....finally! After an 8-month wait, it's finally being built next week :D

It arrives on 19th August and I hopefully collect it on 1st September :bannana:

It's fair to say the guys at Derby look after me ;)

I'd argue the GLE450 would be the better buy (especially considering the mileage I'll do in it ) and had we not had an ML63 before, I'd probably have gone for that car and saved my self a load of financial pain. But after having the full-fat AMG, I suspect I'd have regretted not buying the GLE63.

Yes, I know what you mean. If you can afford it go for it, you only live once. Bet your missing the SLS I know I am. Think I sold it cheap as they (dealers) are asking 30k more than I sold for. Still I was happy at the time. Still working on the Pagoda, trying to get it on the road for Jays GTG.

Paul
