Found a CLS, too good to be true?

CLS55 and CLS500 both had AirMATIC as standard... same as E55K and E500 (same platform underneath basically).

I'm pretty sure I saw that for sale a couple of years ago at the same place advertised with no mot. It stood out as I wondered why they didn't just put one on it considering the mileage. The colour combo is quite nice.

Very nice colour combination good mileage and a lot of potential, with a good deep clean and deatail, to be a nice car. The 113 n/a engine is a wonder of power and silence. Loved the 211 E500 i had for 6 years. Its a rather unusual spec with no heated seats but with keyless go. I love keyless go but the door handles do fail on a pretty regular basis at about £200 a time.
To be fair there’s no real downside to having keyless go - even if a handle stopped working you can still lock/unlock with the remote key exactly as you would on a non-KG equipped car (if you object to spending £200) - and you still have the stop/start on the shifter for convenience :)

Agree about the heated seats - have seen a few 211/219 500s without heated seats which to me is an unusual omission for leather seats in the UK winter.

Two more things to look out for. I used to have a CLS 55amg at the time. Check the SBC pump, they do go bad and are expensive to fix and also when the fuel tank is full you may smell fuel in the cabin as the fuel tank is notorious for having hairline cracks

Yeah, the SBC is a cost no one really wants to shoulder. I had mine go the same time as the Airmatic pump and when a couple of other things needed replacing. Some £2.5k+ later....

Still in theory, it'll only happen once in my ownership so I'll just plod along with it and enjoy the car

This ones had some money thrown at it. Not sure what the ride would be like on those wheels but easy enough to sell if you wanted to go back to OEM.

Doesn't the SBC pump have a finite life in that it counts the number of brake operations, so on a lower mileage car that wouldn't be a problem?

Looks a decent car. Although the headlight lenses look surprisingly "crisp " and clear for such an old car and there have been a lot of front end mods also. Worth checking for a past front end prang perhaps Much as I really like the landscape Cashmere Beige interior (as mine is) I'm not so sure it sits so well with the silver paint. Never seen that combination before.(on a cls55)

A low mileage car, perhaps only driven around town could well have a much higher brake application count compared with a motorway muncher.

That is supposed to be the case, but my old w211 E500 was fine at 110k whilst my wifes SL had to be replaced at 70k because it had exceeded the count. So a bit hit and miss and dependent on driving style I imagine. My CLS55 is still fine at 116k. Its about £1200 fitted as I recall from the SL

Depends on how the car has been driven of course (and other have also mentioned). A higher mileage motorway car may well have less applications than one that’s driven on shorter runs around town etc :)

I’d be less worried about the SBC units these days, and more concerned with the condition of stuff like the steel brake lines (corrosion) - the cost of replacement is similar, but I think there are firms that will rebuild the SBC units for a lot less (a few hundred £££) than the cost of a new replacement (£1k+), which may of course never be required in your ownership anyway :thumb:

Yes, don't get too hung up about the SBC, much cheaper to replace these days.
I think the SBC is a fantastic brake system and it really does do it's job very well. I did make use of it on a number of occasions when I had my CLS55 Incredible stopping power, very stable and secure.
As an aside I have the Toyota/Lexus version in my RC, as many hybrids do.
