W140 CL500 Coupe '97
To those that may of picked up on my introduction thread, you will of seen i had decided on a W140 Coupe as my next car to replace a succession of nice big engined cars that i have enjoyed over the years, the latest being the Vauxhall Monaro with the V8 Chevy....Financially times have got a little tight of late :( and i have had to alter my thinking of having a lot of money tied up in what effectively is a week-end toy!

My love of V8's has been with me for years and i have owned many Yank cars and numerous europeans.....the decision recently to purchase a W140 was born out of much research, which included Jaguar XK's/XJ's & BM E39's plus some others.

I had been looking for a W140 Coupe for around a month now, to no avail :dk:...the very few available were either to expensive, mileage at intergalactic levels, lack of history or just plainly unloved!....to add to the dilemma, i needed a '97 model (Gremlins of Bio-degradable wiring loom sorted, plus other faults ironed out, inc' park sensors all-round, side airbags, coilpacks on newer models etc)...i also preferred the colour black and i wanted to lower the car on Eibachs and add some nice wheels, it transforms the look of the car!

A CL500 was also preferred over the 420, no reason other than the extra power/torque from the bigger engine.

Then this came up......It aint Black but it just seemed far to good to pass up..

It is the CL500, with lowered suspension and some nice wheels, furthermore it has only 51,500 miles on the clock, a great history and everything on it works!...a truly well cared for example..

spent the past 24 hrs giving it the once over and other than the smallest of niggles (intermittent rear window seal adjustment) it is spot on

Note it is at a location where it will spend most of its life

So Far!!!...Really pleased, it seems an absolute cracker for under £3K.

So there was me just ready to make some comment about it being in a petrol station and you beat us all to it.

Lovely looking beast. Hope you get many miles of real happy motoring. Congratulations.

If you've lowered, make sure the allignment is all set and good. In your 1st and last images you front wheel looks at a very odd angle

Nice big motor.

That's got some serious presence. Looks in superb nick as well. Enjoy!

Cheers,

Gaz

Thanks for the comments guys :thumb:

despite having had a 3 or 4 Merc's some years ago (90's models) i was not sure whether i would take to the big Coupe but i must say, it performs and handles remarkably well (i know what handling and performance is, i have had years of M3 and Subaru STi ownership!)

The car feels very tight and precise and i can say without doubt that it is the most stable car in a straight line i have driven at high speed (talking well in excess of 100 mph here your honour:rolleyes:)

I have been tinkering and cleaning around the engine bay today (just to familiarise myself with the workings of the magnificent M119 beast)....read about how this is Mercedes greatest V8 and i can understand why!...i have had V8's with more BHP but they didn't seem to have any more grunt than this motor ..

ps. not searched on here yet but anyone enlighten me on the procedure of adjusting the pillarless coupe's windows? (rear passenger window ocassionally drops down a little after door is shut

Yup, that's definitely the one I see (saw) now and again.

Did it smell rich to you?

I meant to say - it always smelt rich when I saw it but where I saw it meant it could have just been started (always saw it near a servicing specialist and sales).

Still very odd situation though!

Well John, thanks to your heads-up on the Running rich smell, i decided to take a bottle of Fuel treatment with me....i did notice that the car did smell a little rich on tickover (even when at working temperature) I wasn't overly concerned as the vehicles engine, history and tickover/performance was fine.

I put the fuel additive in the tank (not a big fan of additives but i use the 'BG' range of well proven products!)....I filled the Merc' up with some 97 ron Esso supreme fuel and gave the car a good 170 mile blast home (blast meaning never going much below 70, using the kick-down regular and hitting high motorway speeds)

Mighty impressed with the 5.0Ltrs performance :)

Been out in the car today, just a short run, had the car ticking over a few times, blipped the throttle and not a hint of the smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust......fingers crossed that the big motor just needed 'Using' !
