Front Wheel Hubs

Hello Everyone,

I have a C230K W203. So far I had to replace front suspension and wheel bearings last week, but I am still getting a knocking on the left hand side front wheel. I jacked it up and there is some play moving the wheel back and forth. It was there before I got the bearings replaced last week and it is still there now.

There is no play in the suspension in that it doesn't move up and down so the rubbers are ok.

I do need to get new brake discs but they aren't really on their way out, so was thinking it would be the wheel hub.

My questions are, is this a decent diagnosis? Do I have to get new hubs or can I adjust them somehow? What would you do?

Thanks,
Mat.

Hi, no i haven't. Can you advise how to check them? Also drive the car again just now and when turning it makes a scraping sound.

This video may help. The track rod end is referred to as 'tie rod' in the video.

To check for wear, it's easier if you can get a friend to help. One to hold the wheel at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and use alternative push / pull motions, while the other one of you watches the linkage for any play in the ball joint. Alternatively use a pry bar between the two parts it's connected to.

With regard to the scraping, I assume that you tightened the wheel bearings properly?

The car in the video isn't a Mercedes, but the principal is the same.

I got the wheel bearings done at an inde and they were all good. The scraping is on the left side and I wonder how the tie rod ends would cause this sound? It sounds circular in that it makes the noise as the wheel rotates. Cheers, mat.

Tie rod ends wouldn't make a scraping sound, I was referring to the possible cause of the knocking.

Possible causes of scraping sound could be the hub backing plate catching on the brake disc if it got accidentally bent whilst they were replacing suspension or wheel bearing parts, or the tyre rubbing against something if the steering geometry isn't set correctly.

Thanks for all the info guys. I jacked it up again and pulled the wheel and the tie rod ends don't seem to move. But there is play in the wheel. It doesn't look like it moves away from the brake disk and the wheel bolts are tight. The shocks were done a couple of months ago and they have been checked three times. They did take them off again when they did the wheel bearings and then they did proper checks and several alignments as that side had a wheel bearing replaced and that new bearing was faulty so they had to replace it again. The scraping is worrying me know as it started today. It happens on the left side only and at low speed. Wondering if it is the bearing replacement. Thanks, mat.

Get second opinion, it's not hard to find play in a component, wheel bearings are adjustable so I don't know why you had them replaced.

I'm not sure that wheel bearings are adjustable? They were replaced as they were 10 years old. I don't understand your comments? It's not hard to find play when you grab the wheel and it moves?

We had similar on our VW Polo. Turned out the new wheel bearing had not been adjusted tight enough. Not sure on MB but may just be that simples

Of course they're adjustable, they're what are called taper/roller bearings. The principal can be seen in the following pics. Two opposite facing bearings tightened against the angles of the outer casings/cups by applying force to the inner casings/cups.

If you say you can see the disc moving, it sounds like either they need tightening or something is worn. The second video in my post above shows how to tighten them. Did you watch it?
