Frustrating Electrical Problem

Hi everyone,
I am new to the mb club forum and apart from my newbie post in the introductions this is my first main post.

My weakness is auto electrics and really need some help and guidance please.

I believe the problems started with the glow plug control unit. Several times during one week I tried to start the car only to find that the battery was completely drained. I ran a diagnostic test that I found in this forum which led me to the glow plug control unit, testing showed that the unit stayed live and was continuously heating the glow plugs. I ordered a replacement unit from my local dealership which solved that problem.

A few days later a warning came up on the dash to check my rear off side brake light, I replaced the bulb and all was fine. Later that day the warning appeared on the dash to check the front offside parking light, this bulb had now blown!

One morning about 2 weeks ago I jumped in the car started her up and as I shifted the selector from park into reverse the rear parking sensors started screaming as though they were being drowned, there were no obstacles anywhere near the car. This went on for about 2 weeks, and reversing was useless as the tone never changed no matter how close you came to an object.

Then one day it started working normally which just added to my confusion, the next day nothing at all no noises no bleeps nothing!

I have checked my manuals and the forums and going on what I have read my parking sensors must have been fitted later as an addition, my car only has 4 sensors across the rear bumper none in the front, I don’t have any dashboard display lights. I have also checked my fuse designation leaflet which tells me that the parktronic system has a fuse in the boot numbered 13 which I have checked and bay 13 is empty. It also shows a fuse in 41 inside the dash this does have a fuse.

So, I suppose I’m asking 3 questions really.

1) Is something on my car like a voltage regulator causing other electrical items to malfunction if so where and how do I check?

2) If the rear parking sensors are a modification where would I locate the control unit?

3) Am I just going mad and none of this is related?

All suggestions gratefully received, thanks

2. Have a look at the rear light clusters. The parking sensor control unit will be connected to the reveerse light feed so have a look to see which cluster it is connected to, follow the wire and you will find the control unit..

A spate of bulb blowing suggests too high volts.
Get a voltmeter across the battery with the engine running.
It should be about 14 volts, but if the regulator on the alternator is faulty it will be higher, and rising with engine revs, instead of being a steady voltage.
If the volts are high it might have fried your reversing sensor too.

Thanks to everyone, npuk I will have a look at the light cluster tomorrow and post my findings.

I would look tonight but a small game of football on tv and chilled beer in the fridge are stopping me! Lol
