I'd forgotten about this till today when I was filling up I used to do it on my w201 and thought I'd try it. Many people may already do it but you can wedge the fuel cap in the pump handle and let if fill your car it will switch off automatically so don't worry about over filling.
Yes I know I lazy but if putting in £80 worth of fuel I can be lazy lol

That's actually a pretty stupid thing to do. What happens if for some reason the pump auto-cutoff fails? Fuel all over the place. At least if you're holding the lever you can let go. Even I can manage that for the 2 minutes it takes to fill the tank.

I did it for years with my old saab. The Merc fuel cap doesn’t let me do it. The one thing I detest more than anything is stopping for fuel.

Until you get one of them bloody pumps that click and go off when you move the lever more than 5mm past the resting point. Then spend 5 mins stop/start filling :mad::mad::mad::mad:

All North American and [most] Caribbean pumps have auto-lock, I used it there a lot, unless it wasn't a self-service station - many still have attendants, particularly in The Bahamas.

Would use the lock here too, seeing as I mostly do "fill'er'up" ;)

There's a little gadget on eBay to do just that (clips over the handle, cost a few quid), but I don't like the idea of keeping a petrol-smelling (after the first use) plastic in the car, or going through all that extra effort: 'get it out - stick it on - remove and store' - so 'squeeze and hold' it is.

Is it really that much effort? I fill up at lest every other day although the petrol station is just around the corner.
First world problems eh!

This happened to me when the cutout failed and diesel spilled out from the filler neck over my paintwork.

(and rear offside tyre.)

Every other day!! That's a lot of miles, maybe 250/day?
Set of rear tyres every couple of months too I guess, unless yours is lighter on tyres than mine.

I do the same, must be stupid:rolleyes:

I find wedging my lit fag and lighter in the pump handle will do the job and people start waving excitedly at me, happy to see me there no doubt.
According to YouTube, a lighter should only be used at night, to determine if the tank is full.
And, one must do their utmost, to look like a Russian blond to comply with the regulations.

As to wedging your fag in the pump ... I'll get me coat ;)

I sometimes find it's quite tricky to dive in someone else's spot whilst on the phone and keep the fag lighter lit as I jam it into the pump handle at the same time, there must be an easier way eh?:dk:

Works van not the merc, wish I had one to drive for work though! I’m a service engineer and drive all over the country here there and everywhere so yea 250miles a day is a since, clocked nearly 40,000 last year just in me van plus whatever I did in the family car.

In Brazil I have a guy for this!

I am of an age when I can remember that pump nozzles had a trigger lock.
Most still have them but are now inoperative.

You're a lucky man not to have anything worse than that in your life....:D
