Funny Video

I have no expert knowledge on airbags, but our E-class 210 had side air bags and it was rammed on the nearside passenger door by a Renault. The Renault was wrote off (due to age and cost of repair) The 210 needed two new doors (both nearside) The side air bags did not detonate, I have no objection to that as the nearside passenger was uninjured, plus the door could still open and close! What a testament to the strength of these 'rust buckets' My son was recently rammed in his VW Golf and his air bag did not go off, yet this 'elderly' lady with her handbag (with brick??) set off the one air bag????

I enjoyed the footage, it made me laugh, it was good entertainment, but I simply doubt (nothing stronger) the air bag went off because of that incident!!

The airbag sensors are not in the bumper anyway, so unless she was able to totally deform the bumper and make some way into the chassis, at just the right angle, while the car is travelling at the correct speed...

Its not pleasant when airbags go off (especially minor accidents) as they can potentially injure your face/break your nose with the impact...

Also, when air bags go off in minor accidents they are quite costly to replace...;) No prob if fully comp insurance.;)

I think it's just a bit of fun. As Churchill might say, 'some handbag'.

But here's a true incident. I watched, from my bedroom window (mid 1990's) in a hotel in the Black Country, a Rover Stirling being stolen. It was a while before I twigged that it was not the owner trying to stop the alarm and by the time I phoned the Police the thieves had gone. But I was told that one of the tricks for stealing the old, old BMW 7 series was to hit the front wheel with a lump hammer. The car thought there had been a crash and unlocked the doors to let in rescue workers. True or false I've no idea.

From an American forum, it is said that Mercedes fit their cars with heat sensors. If you are in a motorway concertina crash, you may be knocked out and unable to leave the car. Petrol often flows along the road in these nose to tail crashes, ignites, and you are left unconscious in the car with the doors locked preventing rescue. You could easily burn to death. Cleverly on Mercedes, sensors detect the heat and unlock the doors. For obvious security reasons Mercedes do not disclose either the existence or the location of these sensors. Otherwise thieves would be putting little bowls of lighted petrol under the cars to get the doors to open. Not something to spread around.
