Finally, at last, my G tech meter arrived today. For those who haven't come accross them before. The device measures to within 1/100th of a second the performance of whatever vehicle it is connected to. These are the type of devices used by Topgear and Autocar to sort of the fact from the claim.

Later on I'll connect it up and have a practice at using it and them I'll start to report the findings.

If there are other members who are interested in taking accurate measurements of their vehicles performance then maybe we can meet up or something.

The G Tech records:

0-60 time
1/4 mile time and speed
Cornering G's
60-0 Braking time
Horsepower

If you are interested in this project then join in this thread and we'll see if we can draw up a database of real results.

I'm not sure what section this should be in so please feel free to move it if you feel that is appropriate!

Ooooh, sounds interesting.
How does it calculate hp?

Sounds fun, but surely horsepower relies on knowing the exact weight of your vehicle at the time??

yes it does require the weight but your cars weight is on the label inside the drivers door.

Sounds interesting! How could we set this up?

Would it need a track type day - or a private road ?

If you mean the kerbweight, that's only a manufacturer's estimate.

The actual weight depends on who's in the driver's seat, how much fuel is in the tank, what you've got in the boot, what the oil level is, what options / extras the car has ... all sorts of things.

Unless you weigh the car before a run you're only going to get a very rough HP figure.

i think we would be needing a decent road, anybody know of a private road that the owners would allow us use of?

I would be interested in finding out.

would we need a set of scales so we can weigh ouselves too. so that the total weight of the car is correct at the time of testing?

I think there is a truck weighstation near my house, I was considering a trip there to find out the weight of my car, with me in it, half a tank of fuel (easy to work out the weight of the fuel anyway) chewing gum, litter, CDs etc in the boot...

Yup a weighbridge would do the trick, either weigh it with a full or empty tank and adjust on the day.

I just found out that it's about £7 to get my car weighed at a waste disposal site in Leeds, they weigh the vehicles coming in and out so they can charge accordingly. You get a receipt with all the info on and it's maintained by trading standards so it's probably accurate. I think if you're paying to dump stuff the weighing price is included, wonder what I can find to dump...

You can get a list of public weighbridges from the local council (most have this info. on their website). Some make a small charge for private vehicles, others are free.

Ok well weight has to be entered in lbs (!) and I'll start my early experiments with 2260lbs but would welcome any better guesses. I will enquire about weigh bridges near me. More later!

OK . First set of results:

4 runs 0-60 leaving out the best and the worst and averaging the other two

0-60 = 8.45secs (Whatcar measured 10sec on their car;))

1/4 mile 1 run only so far

1/4 mile in 16.7 sec, terminal speed at 1/4 mile 70.6sec

More tomorrow when I get more time to play. Grav you around tomorrow?

Ok I found two weigh bridges near me. The label on the door pillar with 1965kg is the maximum permissable weight with a full load of passengers and luggage. In the handbook it says unladen weigh but including driver and 90% of fuel and other fluids should be 1485kg. I took my car to the weigh bridge and the car and me and no fuel= 1540kg. Fuel weighs 0.72kg per litre so when I filled up with 57litres I added 41kg of weight bringing the cars weight with me and fuel to 1581kg. (The lengths I go to eh!) More on this subject later.

The G Tech itself is a fantastic device to use, it is so small and so darn clever, it knows if the car is leaning (adverse camber) or on any slope and tells you so!

You attach the g tech to the windscreen making sure that it is dead straight to the car. You then select Accelaration measurement or G force measurement. Once the levels are at zero you press the button and it flashes go at you. If you accelarate to 60 and then slow down it will give you your time but if you keep accelarating beyond 60 it will do your 1/4 mile time and speed.

I havent done 60-0 yet or G force!

Fantastic fun you tend to drive with it on and measure ever time you pullaway from stationery. If anyone one wants their car done then let me know.

I would be interested in a G Tech GTG.

Mac.

2001 Mercedes-Benz C320 Sport 7.5 15.8
2002 Mercedes-Benz C320 6.8 15.1

Are these figures Manufacturers claimed figures? Wouldn't mid giving it a crack, sounds like a good plan, just hope I get to make it to a GTG :)

I think these figures are all actual tested figures from US car mags
