2004 C230K
Hi

I have a 2004 C230k auto ... yesterday I was driving along and it seemed to stick in a low gear. The revs were still at 4000 like I was going fast but in fact I was doing about 40 mph and it was squeling like a manual car does when its going too fast in the wrong gear. I slowed right down and speeded up to see if that made any difference but it didn't so I pulled over and switched engine off for a short while. When I restarted all seemed to ok again.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and is it indicative of more serious problems looming? When it went for MOT I was advised that their was some dampness around the gearbox sum possibly indicating a small leak could this be anything to do with it?

Can anyone recommend a realiable MB mechanic or auto gearbox specliast in Hampshire as I don't like the price of main dealers

Any assistance appreciated

Cheers
Lynne

This is called commonly "limp mode"... The management system of the car is trying to secure the gearbox... Never force... No 4000 rpms... "Limp mode " is just to go the nearest service or back home... The minimum possible...
Mileage of the car..?
Check first the ATF level of the gearbox... To be checked while engine running and after a drive of 20 minutes... Temperature of ATF has to be around 80 degrees celcius... In limp mode this might be impossible...
If the level of ATF is OK think when you have changed the ATF last time... If never or more then 60.000km ago change the ATF, the filter, gasket and put a magnet in the pan if you don't have it already in...
If the problem still remains then a computer check is highly recommendable...

It sounds like it was stuck in 2nd gear. Common issue and can be fixed easily.

The leak needs to be fixed too. Lack of gerbox oil can cause this type of issue too. DON'T leave it too long as low fluid can do damage.

I am in Hants and can help if you wish. see www.prestigecarservice.co.uk

What was the problem..?

Well I am not very technical .... sure Olly can describe better than me .... but here goes ......

Gearbox was leaking oil from the sump plug area .... and as a result had very little oil  Leak now fixed and gearbox topped up and gear changes are just as they should be now:bannana:.
