Hello.... i hate to keep posting when its with a problem....anyway today i came back from Cardiff. Just after Bristol i noticed smoke coming from out the back of the car..... i stopped and looked under the bonet but all looked ok.... underneath the car it appeared as if oil was dripping onto the exhaust... from the gearbox maybe.... The rest of the journey i travelled around 70mph and it did not do it again.... could it have been because i was going to fast.... oil pressure or thin hot oil in the gearbox seaping out.

I have done over a thousand miles this week......

No service yet...have not had the time to book it in but am too worried i might damage it if i drive it too far now. Are there seals that ned replacing on the gearbox.

There are a couple of thing, but surely you have a dip stick on your car

Is there a dip stick for the gearbox... i have never seen one before..... The engine oil level and presure is fine

You can't drive like this. This is silly. You need to get is seen to by a mechanic ASAP. If you don't, it will cost you more £ in the long run.

Thankyou.... i shall check the dip stick on my lunch break which is at 1am...... and will get it booked in asap......

mine did this last year,

went to Statford upon Avon for the day and as soon as I arrived I noticed smoke billowing up from under the car so I had to call for the recovery wagon

they took it to Mercedes of Stratford to get it checked out and it turned out to be a cracked hose on the radiator

The transmission oil is piped through the radiator to help cool it down.

It's a known issue with my model car where the radiator can fail and lead to water and glycol contaminating the gearbox which can cause some very expensive damage

hopefully this won't affect you but just thought I'd mention it

Thanks... i dont think i could face a new gearbox.... will get it looked at this week.

Checked the dip stick on the gear box.... has two markings (90) and (180) and the fluid was quite a way past the (180)... does this mean its over filled because its been fine since i have had it until that other day.

I dont know when you checked it but i think the car needs to be at normal operating temperature before you check the oil with the dipstick......

Was the engine running.?

Check after a drive to get the gearbox hot then run the selctor through all the gears and back to Park. Leave the engine running and check the level.

The symptoms sound like it's over full though.

Thanks.. checked again after a run and the oil level was the same... so above the top level...... will get it serviced and looked at.... Thankyou all for your knowledge.

Why would it get high and give a problem now when it has been ok I assume for a long time. Has someone topped it up cold? Is there water in the oil?

Sounds weird to me

It's not a case of checking when hot, the engine must be running while you dip ?

When the engine is running, that's when the reading is true

Ah.... i shall ckeck again...i misread dieselmans note to leave it running... its going in to my local MB specialist (MERCARE) in Plymouth for engine and gearbox oil change and service soon so hopefully all will be ok.
