Hi all new to the forum and new to owning a Merc up to now it's all been bad and it seems like problem after problem, just been hit with a £800 bill for parts sensors bottom arms you name it I have had to replace it over the past few months any way onto the latest problem.

I have a 09 plate auto sport CDI, just put it in for a transmission oil change and filter. So I picked the car up last night and after a short drive home there seemed to be no issues. Now today after about a half an hour's driving on the motorway there was a clunk and it seemed to jump out of gear put the hazard lights on and tried to select a gear manually is was saying I was in 5th then 4th but i was in nuteral nothing there at all when trying to accellerate once the car slowed down to around 30mph it corrected itself and went into 3rd then it drove fine the rest of my journey. Could this be a sign of the wrong fluid put in during the change or is it more serious???

Cheers all

I took it back to him when it happened and he said sounds like the box is on its way out is he having me pants down

Was it OK before he got it.

yeah basically it felt like it was slipping so we checked the levels and it was below quarter so I told him to flush it new oil and filter never had it jumped out of gear before though I think he has used the wrong oil

the 7g box oil levels need to bang on for it to work properly . ask him what oil he used and if he also drained the torque converter before filling , because if he didnt you now have a gearbox with possibly 2 kinds of oil that are mixing. for him to now say the box is on the way out is like saying "sold as seen ".

the box is also filled from the drain - heres a video of how its done .

Thanks I am dropping the car off with him tomorrow and he's going to have a look I will ask him if he drained torque converter seems funny it only happening after he's done the change , at first he said it could be air in the system that caused it but he said it's probably the box

goodluck , this guy sounds mint. ask him the filling procedure and if he let the fluid run out until a drip .

Will do onefortheroad, I am going to ask what he put in it aswell. I am a bit concerned about it to be honest last thing I need is transmission failure after the amount I have spent putting the thing right

Update, seems to be getting worse jumped out of gear twice on a short run this time I put it into manual and it went into gear no problem feels like it happens when it drops down a gear it's not catching the next one, anyway he says he's going to check it over today but he says it's the box.

I found the oil he used and I think it's the right stuff automatikgetriebeöl ATF. Never had this problem before so am quite annoyed hopefully he will sort it out today at some point

How many miles has the box done? Wen was the oil last changed, it’s not uncommon for a oil change to finish off a bad box. From what I’ve learned the valves in the box control the timing of the change and quality, the clutch packs in the Tc is what makes the change. So sounds tome a Tc could be at failing.

The oil below 1/4 may well be the cause ??

May well be but usually they lock in a gear usually 2nd well at least on the 5g box’s, where has the rest of the oil gone??

So the car has 109k on it some service history but nothing into detal, so if it is the clutch packs am I looking at a big bill? I seriously can't handle another big big it's crippling me lol

There was a leak I was aware of this when I bought it few drops a day he said, it was that but after the change of oil he said he had sorted the dripping

If it’s a new clutch pack/Tc yes it’s not a cheap item, it’s only I’ve just been through this with my e55, I had to have 2 new shift solenoids an electronic plate but mine was shifting harshly never slipped or missed gears. Fingers crossed correct fluid should sort it if it’s short on fluid.

No it's full now, it only started doing it after the oil change that's what's got me thinking has he done it wrong? Has he put the wrong amount in?

Another update,

So they never filled it from the sump as shown in the video he thinks this isn't the cause he says it's just less chew on he filled it through the filter or something. Anyway put it on the computer to see if there is any faults showing up but nothing so he's getting a specialist from mercedes to come have a look and drive to see if he can work out what it is causing it but everything seems to be pointing to the torque converter
