Hi i have a 2000 SLK 320 auto and this morning i started her up and when i put her in reverse the gearbox jolted and clunked into position its never done this before ,so i put it back into park and tried it again and the same thing happend i drove off to work as normal and it was ok but i have no idea what it was i have only done 36,000 miles in her any suggetions.

Also i have acquired a rattling vibrating noise when i accelerate from what seems like the drivers back wheel area it only last about 6 seconds then goes, its when i am going from 1st to say 2nd gear.

 kind regards

I have noticed when the car is cold, if I select reverse, there is a bit of a thump going in however, as soon as the oil in the gearbox warms up a bit, it's back to normal.
As the box runs on hydraulics, temperature will effect the operation as the viscosity of the fluid is crucial to smooth changes.

The vibrations might be the propshaft drive doughnut on it's way out.... this might also lead to a thump going into gear as the cushioning effect of the rubber is lost.

get the clutch on your aircon kompressor checked, if its ok get your gearbox oil changed!

Thanks for the replys i will get on the case right away and keep you posted

kind regards ;)

also check the gearbox oil level mine was low and it was doing similar! oil change is good advise tho
