W124 CE300 24 autobox failure

This morning I checked this morning and I got 30mph at 2000rpm and 20mph at 2000rpm which I believe it's 4th ans 3rd gears . I also tried the gear stick at position 3 and position 4 and it did respond.
What confuses me is the high rpm on the motorway. It should be lower than what I see.
Which switch you are referring to? I was not aware that there are fault codes stored in the obd1 . Mine has the 16 pin obd system.
Are there any schematics that I can download, similar to realoem for bmw,s?
Correction 1500RPM at 30MPH, which I belive its 4th gear. I will try to find an open road to try to get it to 5th (or 4th).

Firstly, put the E/S switch into the E setting. That should make gears change up sooner, at lower revs. Mine is in 5th before 50 mph.

From start-up, cold, I expect the first change, from 2nd - it starts in 2nd - to 3rd at about 3500 rpm because the system envokes a cat-cleating programme when cold. That's on mine and it's working as it should. You may not have a cat so may be different.

Yes, the 16 pole diagnostic socket enables one to read and clear codes. You need an LED blink tester. I can give you more details when I haven't spent a day trying to get my fibre connection reinstalled by Orange. After 5 days!!!

And you need the code lists that, again, I can send you when I'm less livid and drunk.

First thing to do is report again with the revs at various speeds so it's clear to my addled brain.

I've just been for a drive. 50 mph at 2500 rpm - 4th gear.

50 mph at around (hjust under?) 2000 rpm - 5th gear.

To recap, this in a 1991 300CE-24 with 722.5 5-speed gearbox.
