Gearbox overheat?

Hi

I think my e240 auto gearbox may be or previously overheated. The sound proofing around the transmission tunel has got a white film that can be scratched off easily. When we first got the car there was a slight smell of plasticine.

Is this an indication of a hot gearbox?

Should I change the atf...the car has done 100K?

Thanks for your help

Adam

Do a search in the forum.
I am sure that I have read somewhere that MB now recommend changing fluid at 80k. Might be a worthwhile exercise for minimal cost.

Thanks for the advice. I have been toying with changing the oil. The only problem is my torque converter can not be drained so will have to do a partial drain.

Interestingly I had the codes read on the car but the garage were not very helpful and mumbled something about the ATF temp. sensor. Should have pushed him harder.

I also had a go (unsuccessfully) at reading the ATF level...it also had a burned plastic smell?

Cheers

Adam

I can understand it overheating but it should have thrown up a fault due to the sensor.
Also I don't understand the white deposits, that sounds more like antifreeze or road salt.
Have you tried smelling or tasting the deposits?

The block drain is near hte back of the engine and it's quite possible that antifreeze has spilled onto the bell housing.

Hi Dieselman,

It may well of said sensor fault.....thinking about it I'm sure a saw fault on the screen.

Sorry I was not clear the white deposit is on the soundproofing on the inside of the car on the tunnel, under the carpet. The only reason I noticed it is because I'm installing a uhi phone loom:)

Cheers Adam

There's a Mercedes technical bulletin about this strange smell. I've read it somewhere but can't remember where. Do a Google search and you'll find it
