Gearbox woes!

Yes, if the differential is the wrong ratio it will typically log an "implausible ratio" fault when going into 3rd usually.

I can't find anything on those PN,s but the ratio is stamped on the flange at the rear:

Above example is 3.67:1

Thanks for reply Alexander, have checked the flanges but can't see the numbers you have identified. Removed the Ebay diff yesterday and compared ratios. The original is 3.25:1 and the Ebay one is 3.375:1. These are approximate measurements but there is a distinct difference of 45 to 40degrees on the input side. Unfortunately this means I am back to the same issue I had before the MOT as the original has a clunk . I intend to open it up and have a look. I am not sure if it is possible to buy the bearings and spacers seperately. Time for more research.

While any diff can fail, these diffs are considered bulletproof and rarely fail. The often lose oil through the driveshaft seals, but even then, refilling it with oil usually fixes the problem.

If I understand correctly, your diff makes a clank noise even when full with the correct oil? And, have you looked at firms that can refurbish your own diff?

Hello Mark, it is similar to excessive backlash, I will check tonight, as I intend to open it up. The ebay diff I had installed is very tight in comparison. I have a long background in engineering so probably have the tools and equipment to refurbish my original diff. I need to find a supplier for the bearings. The repair kits that can be bought on EBay are seriously overpriced. I already have the sizes. Actually cheaper to find another second hand diff than refurbish.

You may be able to re-use parts from the eBay diff? They won't all be different even if the final ratio is not the same.

I have considered this as there doesnt seem to be any major adjustment concerns. I am assuming backlash is adjusted by changing the spacers either side. Don't think the pinions will be same or I would just swap the ring gear. (Might not be correct terminology)

The internal parts should all have MB part numbers stamped on them, so as long as the part numbers are the same between the two diffs then you're fine to swap them. If disassembling and reassembling then I'd also try to find a data source for the various torque settings.

Will update tomorrow when I have had a look inside. Thanks for the replies.
