Even W124s have gearboxes with different numbers for the various models. The MB list of W202s I'm looking at has six different autobox numbers for the six variants of the model and three manual-box numbers for those same six variants. None of the numbers are common to the W124 and W202.
Same boxes though, the 124 versions have manual speedo drives, and the 202s have an electronic speedo drive, but can be swapped over without any hassle.
Thing to watch is the C280/E280 with the solinoid for the heat pump, but even they bolt up, but just hold on to the early gears a bit longer.
I did but the sump wasn't sealing and so it had to come off again. The gearbox failed completely so it won't select drive and hence the car can't be driven forwards, but reverse can be selected.

Nick, what's the significance of the numbers then (innocent question)? They all start with 722, but the second three digits are all different. For autoboxes I know that the fourth digit indicates the number of speeds: 3 or 4 = four speeds, 5 = five. For manuals the first three being 716 indicates four speeds and 717 five.
