Is that one of the newer versions with lifetime map updates included?

RRP for the TomTom Western Europe map set is £65, which isn't far off £100 for an M-B DVD. But TomTom discount all the time, I paid £32 in March for a 12 month subscription (new maps quarterly plus ad hoc updates).

The minor updates are free, but major new releases need to be purchased. Unless he got some sort of special 'maps for life' deal from TomTom?

Similarly, when I bought my first TomTom there were two versions on sale, one without TMC which could be purchased as a bolt-on annual subscription, the other with built-in TMC with free lifetime subscription... which was odd.
