A class sport premium
Hi

I will be picking up my new A class on the weekend and whilst I know it’s the lower end of these premium cars, it’s an expensive purchase for me so I really want to double up on security.

I’ve heard about the ghost auto watch and would like to get this installed but understand some installers can be questionable. Are there any recommended on this forum? I’m based in London.

Thanks 😊

How does the ghost work when car goes for service, understand you need a button sequence on steering wheel?

I’m a newbie so can’t PM. Do you know how I can get hold of them? Thanks

@jaymanek

There is a “service / valet mode” - I don’t recall all the details but it is all on the Autowatch site including a lists of compatible cars.

The button sequence is not restricted to the steering - IIRC it uses the telephone buttons, window buttons, light switches, pedals etc - dependng on the car make & model.

I have the Autowatch Ghost II fitted to my C43.

It does have a valet mode, but that cancels itself once the car is stopped and re-started - at least it seems to for me. When I send the car for service I change the code to something really simple and give the garage instructions on how to start it. Then when I get the car home I change the code back to what I want.

Be advised that the buttons you can use can be VERY restricted. There are only about 7 buttons in my C43 that can actually be used. However the length of the code can be up to eight (possibly more) button presses so you can come up with a reasonably complicated and not guessable sequence.

What you say is not 100% correct. Service/Valet mode (and remaining in that mode) is dependent on several conditions. However my preferred option would also be to give the workshop a different code.

Just saying how it seems to work for me - mine was the first W205 FL C43 to have the Ghost installed - Autowatch had to send a guy down from Scotland to manually tweak the firmware as the normal W205 firmware didn't work correctly, a firmware specific to the C43 did not exist. At least not one that worked correctly - before tweaking it would allow the car to be started but not put into gear, which wasn't acceptable to me. Perhaps the valet mode needed further refining.

However, like you say, I would still prefer giving the garage a different code because then the car remains protected wherever they may leave it.

I know a couple of blokes with them on there easily theivable (from the factory) Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio's . One has had nothing but problems since install....the other is problem free....so make of that what you will.
Don't expect to get anything off your insurance though (I realise that wont be most peoples reason for getting one)....they are not Thatcham approved....and my friends insurance company had never heard of it and it was not on there system.

If you have issues with the Ghost then all you have to do is contact Autowatch directly - I know a number of people who had issues sorted out this way - it was actually the endorsement I need to get one myself - and they actually sent a guy all the way from Scotland to fix my issues personally. The installers can be a bit hit and miss, especially if it doesn't work correctly out of the box. The Ghost might not be Thatcham approved but the current one is TASSA approved which is a fairly good endorsement.
