Autowatch Ghost II or Pandora or ...................

Wow, what a useful thread.

I’ve just gotten myself an EQS and am also having the Ghost II/Pandora thought train.
My friend's rangerobber got stolen and he has stuck both on it now and has been rewarded with a 3k insurance premium

The Autowatch Ghost has a carjack option. That is if the door is opened the car will stall when next put in gear unless the code is entered. I dont use the option myself but its there if were to move to London ;-)

How do you know about this? It doesn't seem to be documented anywhere?

For various reasons, making the decision has dragged out and Pandora is no longer on the options list for me.

Has anyone had any experience with or currently using a Starline S series security system. From the research I’ve done so far it looks to be the same as a Pandora system but with a reduced price tag. Plenty of add on’s too.

I understand some people don’t want to discuss what security systems they are using, but if anyone is willing to share their experiences that would be much appreciated.

Can I ask why you have discounted Pandora Richie?
The Starline systems look interesting.

After contacting two of the closest authorised installers on multiple occasions (4 or 5 times each), I had zero returned calls or emails.
I sent a message to HQ in London and a gentleman called me back within 10 minutes which was promising. Without hesitation he told me the best model for my car was their ‘black edition’, it is a wireless system with all the bells and whistles, excuse the pun.
He informed me that the probable reason for others not returning my calls or messages was they would rather earn their money by easier methods/jobs than the particular Pandora model I was enquiring about. Which is understandable, but at least have the decency to return my calls and let me know.
The gentleman from HQ was very knowledgeable and was happy to keep pointing me towards their flagship model with a price tag of £2,100 fitted, plus I’d need to leave the car with them for 2 days. I told him that I wasn’t wanting to spend that much on a system and 2 days in the big smoke wasn’t of interest. He was sharp to end the conversation after I asked for advice on another options/models, I suspect because he also wanted an easy installation.
He since hasn’t returned any calls or emails, you could say he’s Ghosting me (see what I did there?).

One of my work colleagues has a Starline security system on Range Rover Sport SVR, so I thought I’d put it to the board and see if anyone else has experience with them.

^ I can see why Pandora isn't on your wish list now. Over £2k for an additional security system is a but much. Not great pre sales either going on your experience.
Understandable to consider in high car crime areas like London/Birmingham/Manchester but not so much in my part of the country, or yours I imagine.
Thanks for coming back on this.

My thoughts exactly, Roger.
I know you can never say never, but I tried explaining my car doesn’t get left often and when it does it isn’t in high theft areas so most of the top end tech is over the top for me, not to mention out of my price bracket.

Looks like Ghost did its job on Marcus Rashford's Roller.
Fast forward to 1min 25 secs to see why the car wouldn't start.

Ghost also lowered your insurance. I have been reading (above and on the web) that it isn't Thatcham approved, therefore I wouldn't have thought it would have any influence on insurance premiums.

If was to go for the Pandora, at the extra cost I would hope I would be able to remove it and reinstall it in another car. Does anyone know if this is an option as I've only heard of Ghost II being reinstalled.
Ghost 2 is recognized by the Tracking and Aftermarket Security Systems Association (TASSA). Ghost Immobilisers are not Thatcham approved, this is because the method that the Ghost Immobiliser works on does not have a banding category within the Thatcham mode of certification. So some insurance companies will give discount.

Boom insurance (who I’m with) recognise Ghost it’s one of the conditions I needed to insure my C63 and was £500 cheaper than anyone else

Pandora hmmmmm - firstly I wouldn’t spend money with any Russian outfit, for moral reasons.
Plus I wouldn’t trust that someday they ‘switch off’ and brick your car.🤯

We had pandora lite installed on our abarths about 4 years ago. Pretty reliable, tags last a long time, maybe 2 years with a cr2032 or whatever they have in them. App was always buggy - never really used it, crashed lots, and sometimes could never communicate to the car - things may have changed since then but not sure - we don't even have the app installed on our new phones.

Positives are the tags - without the tag in range the car will not start, 128bit encryption - not able to boost signal (so they say), when the app was working could monitor basic functions on car a bit like mercedes me. It auto enables and disables with factory remote / lock and unlock. Bit of a delay sometimes with it detecting the fob - but I mean you unlock car then walk up to the car and when it the detects fob it disabled the system. Anti-car jack on it is good - get pulled with the tag on you - car will shut down after a set period of time (think you can program in the app again, when and if it works). Pointless if like us you normally cannot be bothered to carry a separate lanyard and tag and the tag is on your keys in the car somewhere, but if you keep keyless go key in your pocket than maybe its ok.

Has tilt, shock sensors built in, and door / battery etc, with battery backup so even if disconnected from battery it will still work. Sensitivity of all sensors can be adjusted in the app (AGAIN IF IT WORKS!!!). Audible alert when car is bumped is good - had some kids near the cars on the drive and bump into them and it warns away, and so on. Useful if someone's going to try and bash the door lock or do something forcibly to the car to get in it that it warns them away before they do damage. If they do it twice alarm goes off.

The mis-sold the lite to us though - it has very limited number of outputs, so I didn't have all the functions I wanted wired in. So I upgraded mine to the lite-pro, with the LCD remote.

The LCD remote was quite cool but bulky, hanging it around my neck every time I went out was a bit annoying. It is supposed to alert you and enable you to control the car from about 2km away - never really had chance to experiment with it, but did provide some extra level of comfort when parked in a town / city shopping. It makes god awful tacky bleepy noises every time you lock and unlock though - very tacky and reminded me of a 90's tamagochi.

Lite pro had more outputs, and could do remote start etc, but you need to get a spare key programmed from the dealer and hidden in the car with the system - dodgy as to me, why on earth would I want to leave a fully coded factory key in the car somewhere!!!! So kind of pointless if you ask me.

The lite was about £500-600 back then, lite pro about £1000+, and the 'elite' system with tracker etc was £2000. Add the cost of a spare key from the dealer and additional fees for extras and fitting.

I have an aftermarket tracker on the merc (not the mercedes me one - waste of £29 a month - don't trust it, plus notifies on the screen, plus app is buggy as hell, so gives me no confidence it is reliable, mis-reports car ignition status often, so even disabled the remote lock unlock features etc, not impressed!).

Had a ghost - annoying to be honest, I want to get in my car press one button and go, not piss around pressing buttons on the car like I am trying to enter a cheat code on a 90's console controller every time I want to start the ignition, but believe a fob is also available (haven't tried the fob, but makes sense if more convenient). Downside to the ghost? Well no one knows the car has one, so as with cars like the abarth, by the time a thief has bent the hell out of your door frame and hammered the locks, connected the OBD start tool, your car is already badly damaged - I think the point of having a good imobiliser system is to not only prevent it being taken, but to also try and stop damage, so ghost does not get my vote.

Honestly I think the best value and most functional option is the pandora lite. I really should load up the app soon and see if it works properly now - it crashed on open on my old phone after an update and neither the UK headquarters or anyone in their support network knew what to do, plsu back then confusingly they had multiple apps on the appstore, with some being buggy and some being more compatible than others with certain models - not the best.

Pandora also comes with an over-ride card, but good luck putting the code in with just one button in the OBDport area - had to try it before to reset the system and it was a nightmare! Again though, thankfully the one fitted to the wifes car we just fitted and forgot about and its 99% reliable once we configured it to how we want and we just left it with occasional battery changes to the tags.

Hope some of this is useful to you.

As an addition to this, I have heard of one car being stolen with a pandora fitted in the owners group - but no information to validate, or say how exactly this occurred, if the thieves managed to bypass or whether they gained access to the tags or wiring and bypassed somehow. Yes the origin of the kit and devs are Russian if that affects how you feel about the system. We had ours fitted back in 2000 before things really kicked off in 2022, haven't really thought since about whether that would factor into me getting another.

Thanks Steve, great write up and I’m sure it will be very helpful to anyone thinking about either of these systems.

Ghost ii can be unlocked via my smartphone without needing any button presses, In some ways I prefer that to a fob.
