Morning

Still having a dispute with the supplying garage (non MB) who say that they do not think there is a problem. Car is W203 220CDi

Glowplug light goes out when I start the engine. But as soon as I put it in Drive the light comes back on and stays lit for about 1 minute.

Comments anybody?

Ta!

Dodgy glow plug or relay, the light coming back on after starting is to inform you of problem, Dealer will confirm this, best to replace all glow plugs, false economy to replace just the faulty one,as sods law deems another will fail shortly after first.

Glow plugs

Hi I had the same thing start car glow light went out.
Then came back on for about 1 min.took to
The indi today had all five plugs changed
There was only one faulty plug . But now no
problem. So yes I would say u have at least
One plug out. Cost me £173.00 including vat.

As above it's likely to be a failed plug.

Replacing all of them depends on age/mileage. One went on my Vito at 35k miles - no way I was going to have the other 5 replaced as well 'just in case'!

I would say that it is definitely a failed glow plug.

If you have a multimeter they are dead easy to test, about 6 ohms resistance with a good one, probably infinite if it has failed and short circuited. Test between the contact on the top of the glow plug (pull the connector off) and a good known earth point.

I don't believe in "replacing them all".

I have had one fail at 180K miles, one at 230K miles, one at 275K miles and the final one is original (286K miles)

So far they have been easy to change, just get the engine really hot and don't use too much force (I unscrew them with the torque wrench set at 20nm, and up to now they have come out at a lower torque). I use the same setting when refitting (with a touch of copper-slip on the thread).

About £10 for a glow plug and £6 for a long reach 10 mm socket to them out and in.

Good luck

If a glow plug is faulty, do you really have to change it on these engines? My understanding is no. Its just for emmissions when you first start the car, makes no difference if you have a good battery.

Access is a bit tight in a Vito so I didn't fancy DIY:

Main dealer did it for £120, which wasn't too bad IMO.

AFAIK they do assist in starting when the engine is stone cold.

Had my car a week and I have the same issue - glow plug dashboard lamp re-lights after car starts. Looks like I'm headed for a set of new plugs although I have a real phobia over that particular procedure since my local garage managed to snap one off in my Vaux Combo van last year - little change from £500 as they had to have the head off etc. God knows what the cost would be for a Merc.

I had the same symptoms - replaced all the glow plugs as I was keen for a bit of preventative maintenance as my milage is going to increase massively in the new year; problem solved.

Fault codes need erasing don't forget, or else the Ecu still thinks there's a glow plug down.

Regarding snapping glow plugs, get it as hot as possible if its going to break its going break doesn't matter if you, the garage or Father Christmas does it.
