my w211 glow plug dash light comes on for about three seconds, then goes off. if I try to start car straightaway it will churn over for ten to fifteen seconds before starting, however leave it for ten seconds after light goes out car starts straightaway. now question how long should light stay on for ?.do I have fault with glow plug relay ? thanks for any help.

Time for new glow plugs first. If the relay is faulty or a fuse link has gone the glow plug light will stay on.

Has the glow plug relay ever been changed? The V6 cdi does like to dine on them. A code reader should give you a basic idea of any codes stored, STAR will be more thorough.

For my 320cdi, glow plug light should be 2-6 seconds in cold weather / first crank of the day.

Have a look at this vid for an idea Mercedes W211 E320 CDI (224 Ps) - cold start -18°C - YouTube

I have had a glow plug light on my wife's 'lemon ' A180cdi for about a year now . At ignition , the light comes on and goes off . When the car starts , the light returns and goes off after a minute or so . I have taken the car to my indy Merc specialists Nair Autos in Harrow and they 'wrestled ' with the plugs and called up to say that they could not remove them cos it's a common problem with many A , B and diesel V6 units . Very poor MB design ! , and many times the glow plugs snap then it is a specialist job to remove them !
But the good news , at least for me , was that after having kept the car 24 hours and run it hot etc , they were able to remove the dodgy plug , so no light .
My car has barely covered 50000 miles and has had numerous faults in the 4 years that we have had it ie ABS pump etc and rodents chewing thru cables etc !!!

Hi
I had starting issues with my e280, had two glow plugs replaced and a new relay, still first time in the morning it would crank and crank then fire up with a puff of unburnt diesel and would run faultless and start there after first turn of the key.
After a lot of fault finding and a big dent in my wallet they came to a conclusion in the local inde that there is nothing wrong with my merc.
A few weeks later by accident I left turning the key over after the glow plug light went off for quiet some time, then went back to start the car later and it started instantly, no cranking at all or puff of smoke, so over the last couple of weeks I have come up with the perfect time of fifteen seconds counting in my head from glow plug light out to turning key to start and every time it has started instantly.
I can`t explain it or it just might be my car but I thought I spread the word, you never know it might cure your starting issue.
Only thing I can think of is maybe the glow plugs are still warm and it`s generating a little bit of extra heat in the fifteen secs count down.

Glow plugs stay on after the light goes out to assist in cold start running.

My light stays on for about 3 seconds
